Need help solving part shade, clay, and deer equation.

Well as a new home owner and totally new gardener I planted hydrangeas in my front garden bed. They seemed to be doing well in the part shade, clay soil until the deer came and mowed them down. Now I have an empty garden bed and no idea where to go next. I need some plant ideas for what will grow well, with relatively low maintenance in my zone 8, part shade, clay soil, deer visited garden bed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

If I were you I would go to a local garden center, not a big box store, at a time when the employees aren't busy and ask for recommendations. Before you go be sure to notice how much sun the area gets, is the sun morning or afternoon sun, is it dappled or is it full sun. So maybe on a sunny Saturday or Sunday chart how the sun hits the bed every couple of hours. Even if it's every 3 hours that would still be helpful.

I'm not sure telling a plant nursery employee that you had hydrangeas there and they grew well would be helpful enough, since some hydrangeas take more sun than others.

If you don't have a local nursery then maybe look at pieris, plum yew, mahonia and gardenia. I don't have much of a deer problem but I see these plants suggested as deer resistant. The yew may be too small but it is a lovely plant everywhere I have seen it - not as lovely as hydrangea but I do love the needle foliage on the yew. I have mahonia in my yard but I don't like it.

I see banana shrub and bottlebrush buckeye are on UGA's deer resistant plants list. I love both of those shrubs. Banana shrub is not particularly beautiful to me but I love the smell. I have a beautiful pink bottlebrush buckeye in my yard; mine is more like a very small tree than a shrub.

You have my sympathies. I don't have a deer problem but I do have a bunny problem. During the intermission between the death of my dog and the time we got another my bunny problem was terrible. My dogs are indoor pets but we play together out in my fenced back yard a lot; I guess the smell of them keeps the bunnies away now. Those darn bunnies did a lot of damage in the interim, though, and they still chew in the unfenced area of my yard.

Just don't make the mistake I did...In the winter is your foundation going to look bare 'cause the Hydrangeas are deciduous? Should you sprinkle in an evergreen or two? My Hydrangeas are deer free even though we see deer IN the yard all the time. We grow stinky herbs, use human hair from my head shavings, and Deer & Rabit Liquid Fence. My white buckeyes (Aesculus parviflora) and red buckeyes are going gang busters in a sight that sounds similar to yours----3-4 hours direct sun at 10 a.m. Same spot has black-eyed Susans (blooming), Callicarpa (beautyberry),

Conoclinium coelestinum (blue mist flower) and Beebalm (bloomed like mad). I hope this helps!

I think the LA series are very well built and if they aren't abused and are maintained will provide many years of service. They are not like the deeres of old but what is made like the days of old these days? not too many things. I took a LA165 home and used the 30 day promise to trade up to a x320 and am glad I did only due to having 3.5 acres of hills and inclines and I didn't think the LA series was enough tractor. I pull a 850lb yard roller and it's effortless and I weigh 240lbs with 90lbs of ballast in the tires. I think the john deere quality shows in all of their series but you can't compare them to the deeres of the past it's not a fair comparison. I spoke to several of the techs from several dealerships that said they have not seen a x320 in for tranny service in forever if that helps.

as i'm thinking about your question I'm imagining the space, and realizing that 3' x 8' is about the size of a sofa.I'm thinking you need bold visuals- rather than small fussy foliage-to play off the all-green back wall and to be seen across a distance from the walkway. I am thinking a small variegated weigela, which blooms a long time,along with a small deep purple presence- a patch of purple perilla or a mini dk. ppl.weigela or your ppl.heuchera idea.A 3-season patch of Yellow (that would also play nicely w/ the rozanne) could be provided by carex Bowles Golden or Hakonechloa or golden Tradescantia____ which would provide you some spiky form in the midst of mounded shapes.Also helpful for shape and color and height variety- would be the tall yellow flower spires of kirengeshoma and the ppl. foliage w/ white floral spires of cimicifiga black negligee. you might like 1 or 2 peonies next to your iris. best, mindy

What is white rock? Is it a rock? This stuff I have you can cut off, and ball it up and probably make a clay dinosaur out of it. I rarely dig (I am a no til gardener) that deep except to bury a bean pole, but next time I do I make make a clay?? type bowl and put it in the oven. I am no expert on soils or rocks. I do wish I did knew more on the subject. I do love my sunflowers that tend to volunteer from birdseed that the birds drag off better than the ones I plant! From what others say, I think my soil is pretty good. I did a perk test once to plant a tree, and was surprised it drained out of the hole. The hole was in a wettest part of the yard too. To missinformation, do know of a good website or book I can get that will tell me all about local conditions or the soil and the like? Are from this area too? Yes I could do a web search but unsure what to search for. And the thousand of hits out there it takes weeks to do research on a topic. I had tons gardening bookmarks , but lost them all a few weeks ago due to a computer glitch. It is depressing. I had lots of source of seeds I intended to buy one day, links to soil health sites, no till gardening, history of veggies, link to weeds I have in my yard/garden. Links to photos of trees and wildflowers I would like to get. links to neat looking trellis designs, neat sites of other's texas gardens. I had so much fun stuff. Not sure all what , but gone now.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I should have included a bit of back information that would better give orientation about my overall objectives. This first year or two, my main objective is to define the borders of the porch for my two large dogs. Until now, we had a pad and grass up to the pad (pad is the same pre- and post- porch construction) and they could exit the pad anywhere. Now, I want them to get used to exiting the pad onto the sidewalk in the center, because elsewhere will now be beds (and mud and mess and plants to be stomped). That's why I've bombed the front with the cinnamon ferns, to make a sort of visual railing while the dogs re-learn their exit, and while the beds age in with better soil and I get some other plants going (hostas, etc.). For the first year or two. It will be no problem to move the ferns around the corner when that time comes. I've always wanted a mass of ferns on this eastern facing side: My second objective is to create a streamlined mow line. The grass is maintained with a 60 inch deck mower so whatever bed edge I develop needs to allow the mower to move along it easily (I guess rather than undulating what I was trying to get to was smooth curves rather than corners, for mowing purposes). Third objective is LEAST maintenance from a hand weeding perspective. I know it won't be zero, but I'd like to have it controllable without being consuming. Fourth objective is "pretty." I'm not bothered with "curb appeal" in general as the only viewers are anyone coming up the driveway; this is not seen from the street. Eventually, I would like to grow and develop in a pretty foundation border. I got the ferns cheap and they will help my first objective. As I can, I will add more plants and soil amendments, so that is what I'm asking for - where do I EVENTUALLY want to go with this, etc. I appreciate all your inputs! Please add as you have thoughts!
