Don't miss Lion. I had to turn on subtitles for the beginning, but you could probably get the story without them. The English starts soon enough.

Hidden Figures is excellent. Watched it twice. Ditto Philomena, it was a great movie. And thanks for the recommendation on Lion. It was one I've been meaning to watch.

Grand Designs is wonderful and completely addictive.

We're still wiring up our dropped jaws from watching Boardwalk Empire, viewing Season 4, on Amazon. Love the music over the credits. What *amazing* sets and costumes! We finally realized that "Chalky" played "Omar" in The Wire. (Slow and old here...old and slow.)

We have to intersperse watching this with some calmer fare from Masterpiece Theater -- Home Fires, My Mother and Other Strangers, etc. (I've had it with Grantchester, but DH wants to continue.)

I watched Manchester by the Sea last night on Amazon Prime. It was good but have some tissues handy.

I didn't like Manchester by the sea at all. I couldn't wait to see and found it at the library. Now I can't even remember what it was about, I jut know it wasn't worth my time watching it.

There's a whole lot of 'stretching' going on in many PBS series. They aren't quite as slow as the old soap operas, but...getting there. You remember soaps, where you could tune in years later and pick up where you left off?

While not a movie, I echo CindyMac's recommendation of The Keepers. We finished watching last night. Again not a movie, we thoroughly enjoyed the Australian series Offspring.

We watched No Escape last night (thanks for the suggestion!). Truly edge of your seat. A little bloody for the timid.

I came across a list of the 10 best movies of 2017 that you've already missed. Then a week or two later I was scanning through what is available for free on Amazon Prime, and recognized one of the titles from that list.

The title is "The Girl With All the Gifts", and it would be best classified as a "zombie" movie. I would say it is really, really, not for everyone, even I found a few scenes hard to watch, but I felt that overall the movie was remarkable and really well done, and an interesting variation of a genre that has seemed like it has become played out.

I watched Lion last night, I did like it except for no english speaking for 40 min. I had to turn on the subtitles then finally turned them off about a hour later. It is a good movie. Thanks for the reccomedation. I don't know if its still on but I loved the series "Twisted"

I thought that was a little odd too, JoAnn. But I think one could have gotten the gist of what was going on with the kids even without turning on subtitles. I liked seeing the photos of the actual people at the end of the movie.

I am no stranger to third world living conditions, but watching No Escape and Lion sure was a reminder of my quality of life.

I've been watching The West Wing. What a great series that was---filled with good acting and provocative ideas.

I recently watched The Killing on Netflix. It's been available for a while and I resisted watching it for some reason I can't recall. It's very intense, but so good. I hated for it to end.

Hmmm, neither hubby nor I remember English not being spoken in Lion.

Really? For me the whole first section when it was with the boys was in another language, Hindi I think it was.

Wow. We just finished watching No Escape. We're still trying to catch our breath. I'll bet this happens more than we think.

It was great seeing Pierce Brosnan again. I love anything he does.

Ah, I just did a quick start of the Lion, and you're right. It's Hindu, but the subtitles are there, so it didn't bother us at all. Since it's a true story, it made it all the better. The little boy is so cute the way he runs. He can run for miles.

Arachnoquake. DH saw it first, then we watched together 3 times so as not to miss the directorial nuances. Could be Oscar contender...

Uhhh.... I think they'd have to make up a new category for that one to win!!

Elmer, Thanks for recomending Luther, we are loosing a lot of sleep watching, "just one more". Have plans to check out everyones jugestions. We liked Bloodline and Queen of the South. Not sure if we used Netflix or Amazon.

Watched Lion the other night and LOVED it... but didn't realize you had to turn on subtitles if they weren't there. So yes you can watch it and get the gist of what's going on but I told my husband I wished they had subtitles so we could understand a little better.

I watched it a second time with subtitles, sooo much better.

Another wonderful, but older, British show is Foyle's War. At the moment, I'm watching the whole Midsummer Murders -- one episode a day.

My wife watched the entire Midsomer Murder series, She said she was surprised they had anyone left, so many were killed in the villages of Midsomer County.

Yes -- each episode has about three murders.

I have been watching a cute comedy, Life in Pieces on Netflix, a show about different members of a family. It has James Brolin playing the father.

Just started watching a new crime series on Netflix called Ozark. It definitely holds your attention. For those who liked Breaking Bad.

We are fans of Life In Pieces too. May have to watch a few episodes to understand all the characters. The mother and father's segment is always so funny. One of my favorite programs.

Dean Spanley. It stars Peter O'Toole, Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, and jeremy Northam. Wonderful, quirky, laughs and tears with happy ending.

Dean Spanley a really good movie but I'm not seeing it as currently being offered on Netflix. Everything is Illuminated is currently available and I highly recommend that one.

Hunt For the Wilderpeople. It is not what you would expect at all. You would think at the start it was a simple clichéd story but it turned out to take unexpected turns. Sam Neill gives a great performance.

State Of Play British TV miniseries (2003). There was a US version that wasn't very good. Engrossing, fast moving, plot-twisting thriller/mystery.

Does it have to be a movie? There is a new suspense/drama series starring Jason Bateman called Ozark. Ten shows for the first season. A little slow but it's one of those "I have to keep watching" shows.

I saw The Keepers and I love Judy Dench,so I will check that one out, also....I watch Acorn online TV, too...excellent choices there!

Guess I need to give The Killing another chance. I watched 2 or 3 episodes and just couldn't get into it.

Watched Zodiac last week. It's a complex crime drama that doesn't rely on a lot of gory action to tell the true story.

Finished a pretty good 4 part Swedish series on Netflix - The Most Beautiful Hands in Delhi. Sub-titles needed for the Swedish but most dialogue was English, strange.

If you have Amazon Prime, don't miss Sneaky Pete. It's 10 episodes and will definitely have another season. Brian Cranston is a producer and is one of the stars along with Giovanni Ribsi. We watched Whiplash last night. I thought it was a slow start and intense, but incredibly well done.

Lion was fabulous! Passengers is really good too. I'm not a fan of Sci-Fi, but DH saw it on a flight and ordered it from Netflix so that I could see it. If you haven't seen the Crown or FEUD, they're good too!

We're halfway through "The Last Word". A financially successful -- and widely despised -- woman (Shirley MacLaine) postpones death to manufacture the kind of persona that would result in a glowing obituary. Witty. Sweet.

We are watching No Escape right now. Very good so far.
