DH got paid and said - go buy yourself something dear
Comments (17)I hate to say this, but I went out to get some dish organizers from a local home store - been waiting for cutlery to go on sale so we can replace our set that you can bend with your fingers....... Normally $99 - this weekend $49. 18/10 gauge stainless steel 8 x 5 piece sets plus the hostess set. They were waaaaayyyyy up top but the red sticker caught my eye and the overall pattern is a classic so I know both hubby and I can live with it. I'm done now until we go furniture shopping in the spring to replace our Sanford and Son couch and chairs... I can't believe the sales this week. I'm shaking my head in disbelief. It's really been worth waiting for these items. Wow. Happy b'day to me, happy b'day to me!!!!!...See MoreBuy a new sink or a vintage sink?
Comments (40)Go for it! I have used vintage enamel sinks in the past and will be using one again in my own upcoming remodel. You do need to ensure that the drain size is appropriate for whatever you want to do with it (can it accommodate a modern disposal? Some old ones can, some are 1/2" too small). Have them shoot you a close-up with a ruler. I *think* the exact size is 3.4" - 4" for a disposal, but do google to double-check. In terms of a faucet, they still make nice adjustable-width laundry sink faucets precisely for these sinks (Chicago Faucets is a great source for solid ones that look just like their predecessors), so you can accept a fairly broad range of backsplash holes from 6" to 10". The gloss level is also a good question for follow-up. Get more photos from different angles with light or a flash on it. Dull isn't bad, per se, but it's true that the duller it is the more easily it will stain in the future. Not that you can't keep re-scrubbing it, but it's a factor. One thing is certainly true: there are more of these sinks out there, even this exact model, if you pass this one up. I've seen yours go by a number of times in various venues, like eBay. Have you checked out This Old Tub and Sink? They are awesome and Kevin will take excellent care of you. Slightly pricey but he vets his sinks and tubs very well. I just bought a single deep basin drop-in from him and am very pleased with it. Link to the site below. If you're looking for a single bowl vintage farm sink, there's this popular laundry sink model from the 20s that shows up regularly: link to current eBay auction, $200 Enjoy! Vintage items aren't perfect, but then again after a bit of use most modern ones aren't, either. And the aesthetics just cannot be beat. Take it from a dedicated user of a 1949 stove. :) Here is a link that might be useful: This Old Tub & Sink, Boston...See MoreA Guide to Choosing Accent Colors
Comments (5)My new build has similarities to yours - white cabinets medium tone wood floor, taupe walls. I already had an idea to use blue/greens as accent colors. I found drapery fabric that is primarily deep teal with a circle pattern. When selecting a fabric for the chair seats in the eating area and breakfast bar, I found two possible fabrics with a softer version of aqua teal. I brought them home with a small sample of the same fabric in a lavender mauve. Just seeing them together next to a floral arrangement made me see that the colors worked and could be used throughout the house with a neutral backdrop. In the largest living area (kitchen/great room) I have neutral walls and furniture and teal and mauve fabrics. In the DR, I will have the mauve color on the walls and a softer version on the chairs. There will be common color in the two public spaces that tie together. I guess my point was that if you pick a color you love and look around, you will see something that clicks and have your color scheme....See MoreThings I am drooling over...
Comments (12)It's truly a remarkable piece of property, with the views of the Hudson River and the gardens. Peggy Rockefeller was a wonderful, hands-on gardener. I once got to see her, on her hands and knees weeding, while visiting her fabulous Maine gardens with longtime friends of hers - we left her alone as we were told to do. She designed the gardens herself - what an eye. The house sold for way over the listing price - listing $22 million, sold for $35 million. I just cringe when I think of what someone with that kind of money and probably little taste, will do to that house. I keep hearing the famous decorator, Mark Hampton, from his grave; he said he was waiting for the people with money to get some taste and for the people with taste to get some money"!!! All too true!...See Moreelohbee
