So I went shopping today. Been watching the Sears sale and noticed the Lagostina cookware is on sale - I really want to get rid of teflon - absolutely sick of continually replacing the stuffs that probably contributing to future cancer....I really really wanted to get some super heavy duty, lifetime stainless steel pots - but they're too expensive.

So I'm looking at Sears - the set is half price, under $300. Couldn't decide so I went for a stroll and wound up in the patio furniture section. We need new patio chairs. I don't want plastic anymore - fell through one of our last big plastic chairs last summer and so did DH which ended the set. I'm looking at the lovely sets I can't afford (doing more spring home renos). Well, Sears has last years floor models on sale for 50% or better off. I purchased 4 metal framed chairs - with thick cushions - for a total of $170 with delivery. Scoop!

Head into Loblaws to get a few groceries and milk - they just marked down a wack of ribs, pork chops and chicken souvlaki for 50% off - scoop. Spent $45 on meat and saved $45 on meat. It's all resting in our freezer now!

So I'm still thinking about that cookware. A specialty store called Bentleys is selling Italian Vision Select at 66% off. Higher quality and much heavier than any of the stainless steel sets at Sears. I purchased one large, deep covered skillet for $45 from $149 - scoop! Could not take any more stuff home on the bus. Called DH and told him what I got - I was sooooooo excited about waiting for the price drops and actually finding them - he was very pleased about the savings on the items we actually needed and have waited for. I asked if I could go back and get the rest of the pots to make a full set - he said go for it...so I did. I now have my new 18/10 stainless steel cookware for a total of $170 instead of $500. I'm tickled pink with everything. So is DH. After all is said and done, DH wanted to know what I got MYSELF. I don't need anything. Super happy with the tremendous savings. These sales will probably wind up by the end of Feb before the new stuff/spring stuff fills the shelves so it's probably a great weekend for bargain shopping.

And the added bonus is I need much less heat to cook because of the better quality cookware. And it cleans great!!!!

Lalalalalalalalalalallaaaaaaaaaaaa.

So good day all in all! So gals, get shopping for those items you've been waiting for a sale on!

Tomorrow I'm rearranging the storage in the kitchen for my new pots!

I felt halfway over my cold today, when the weather was supposed to be the highest in a while, 42 F, and even kind of sunny. After a few non-postponable family commitments, I put on a scarf, hat, and down coat and headed out at 2 pm to make tracks before the sun went down at four. Dashing back and forth between the garage and the back yard assembling tools and my huge tray of bulbs, I chortled, "It doesnÂt even FEEL cold!" I decided to start with the little bulbs like chionodoxa that needed shallow 3 inch holes, thinking once I got those done I would feel a great sense of accomplishment. Then I started digging my first little hole. I thought, "WhatÂs that yucky white mold under the mulch?" and plunged my trowel in. Or not. (Did I hit a rock? Move trowel over, try againÂ) Nothing happened. The trowel did not go in even an inch. ThatÂs when I realized the funny looking white stuff was not mold, but ICE CRYSTALS. The ground was already frozen! In mid-November! IÂve planted later than this before! How can this be??? I got a pickaxe and managed to plant maybe 50 before the sun was too far down to continue. That is, if you can call it "planting" when you put a chunk of frozen dirt on top of a bulb and canÂt press it down knowing that if you do, you will crush the bulb. 3 inch deep hole, hah. Those chionodoxa are an inch down if anything. 50 down, 650 to goÂ.ItÂs supposed to snow tomorrow.

hey PJ- Agree with the other posters here about the 'why' of it all. Sometimes it's not about the cost. Take me, for example. I am moreso a flower gardener. I used to not particularly care about veggie gardening, and although I'd grow a veggie patch every year, it wasn't my main focus, and I didn't particularly care if it didn't produce. I was happy with any result I got, but simply didn't care one way or the other. We don't use too much produce in my house. A bag of carrots here, a few apples & bananas there. I don't cook...hate cooking...so I just really have no big need to grow the veggies & herbs for the lower cost of doing it (in volume). PJ might find that there's no real benefit to going through all these gyrations and failures and money-sucking ventures to warrant veggie gardening. But PJ might also find that his/her tomatoes were no less than ASTOUNDING this year, and maybe he/she takes a real interest in "The Tomato" and your focus changes to tomatoes exclusively and enjoying every variety you can get your hands on. I bet I spent more on seeds and black plastic this year than I spend in an entire year on produce at the grocery store. Oh, not to mention the new fence to grow stuff up, and the DH (who is a tinkerer, and one who you cannot leave alone on any given day because he'll make trips to HD and rig something up when you're not looking) deciding that I needed irrigation in my veggie patch, so he rigged up a water-line from the house to the veggie patch. I'd say easy there's over $300 in materials out there this year. To me, that's INSANE. But...and here's the big but...it's not about the cost. It's about WANTING to succeed, WANTING to have a better production, WANTING to enjoy a veggie patch. I really didn't care one way or the other in previous years, and if I found a tomato amongst all the weeds in August, hooray for me. I like gardening. I don't like weeding, but I don't mind it at the same time. I like being creative in coming up with a new design that will make me want to be in there. OT personal stuff: I like art. I tried my hand at Stained Glass once. It was "ok," but something I knew I'd never really pursue heavily. I like mosaic...I keep it as an occasional hobby. I can draw, and paint "sorta" but it'll never be a full time job that I can make money doing. It's about knowing what you're interested in, and what you really enjoy doing, not about cost. I will say that one thing I have tried in gardening that I really don't care about at all is container gardening. I stink at it. I have no discipline to keep things watered, and I'm not interested in the finer points of how to fertilize container plants. I do better on large-scale and a huge compost pile. Anyway, it's really all about what you know about yourself, what you know you like, and what you know you DON'T like, trying some things and either discarding for other things or keeping them and getting better at them. If you're an artist, you might stink at painting & drawing. But you might find that you excel at sculpture and abstract art. You're still an artist. You just need to find your medium. Oh no! We stop at Subway when running errands, or on day trips, b/c I thought it was "healthy"! In fact, DD and I just ate there on Sat (hard to say how often we stop, sometimes we go months without going, other months we're there once a week). I confess I switched to margarine when it was supposedly better for you, and am just now getting back to butter. I avoid anything with hydrogenated fat (except when I make blueberry buckle and strawberry shortcake using shortening in the summer), HFCS, artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but did get hooked on Splenda 10 years ago - I used to take my coffee with just milk, not sugar, then added sugar when I was pg with DS 16 yrs ago, cut it after he was born, had to start using sugar again when pg with DD, and found I couldn't give up the sweetener afterwards, so switched to Splenda. I am finishing my last packets and plan on going back to sugar. I will eat things with sucralose but don't give it to the kids, and we all avoid acesulfame K. I don't bake cakes often, just for birthdays, and do use cake mix then but 6 times a year or so isn't bad. I don't buy anything with soy (GMO), don't generally buy vegetables at store except lettuce, frozen green beans and peas, sometimes broccoli plus canned beans. We grow own but tend to run out in the winter. I switched to sunflower oil for baking instead of vegetable (soy or corn) or canola. Haven't tried coconut oil yet. We do eat conventional meat, but avoid the Dirty Dozen fruits/veggies. My mom gives DD non-organic fruit and snacks like applesauce with HFCS and shelf-stable pudding (which DD decided she can't stand). It makes me cringe - thank goodness DD decided she really doesn't like potatoes in any form so she didn't get hooked on French fries like DS did. Overall I think my kids eat healthier than most kids - DS is 15 and eats at least 2 servings of fruit (1 being OJ) and 3 servings of veggies each day, the only junk food I know of are the Quaker granola bars (not chocolate-covered) I buy them. Of course any time he can get his hands on chocolate he devours it but I can't blame him ;-) DD has more of a sweet tooth than he does - is always asking for "a little dessert" but that for her is a lollipop or a couple of Girl Scout cookies, or some nuts, sometimes more fruit. She eats at least 2 fruits, usually 3, per day but I wish she'd eat some veggies. After reading Fast Food Nation I don't even know if buying organic/grassfed meat would be any better - can't things still get contaminated at the slaughterhouse? As expensive as it is, I may start buying organic meat locally - after asking about their processing.

Funny thing I've read so many times that Moro is the least favorite for taste of the Blood oranges , if it's the least I can only imagine what the best variety taste like . I have a Valencia and the Moro is just as sweet with just a little bit of tart perfect combination. Nancy now I know why your so hooked on citrus your home in Corona must have been paradise I can only imagine all those beautiful scents . My parents had a condo just outside Tampa and there was an orange grove not far from the condo , in March the scent coming from the grove was incredible that's how I became hooked . Nancy isn't always the case bump your flight up to the 5th lol. Brian

Wow, Peg, you found some great bargains! As my mother would say, it would have been a crime NOT to have bought the stuff at those prices!

And you can tell your hubs that you DID get something for yourself -- some happiness! And that's a good thing. :-)

I don't mean to aim a dart at mcpeg and family.

I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable.

How many of you folks feel it necessary to ask hubby's permission before you spend family money?

More than he feels it necessary to ask yours before he buys stuff "for him/for family"?

I'm talking, "permission" here, not discussion of an action prior to implementation.

Well, Joyful, if we did not communicate, we would not be living within our means I fear. So, for any big purchase, we talk about it. If I need to wait, I do. But heaven help those who just spend and the heck with being responsible about budgets or credit card debt. Ya gotta have goals, plans, and financial security.

I don't have to ask but I do. From day one with DH we have both been upfront with finances because we never want to have that as an issue between us. He often gives me hell because I'm frugal when it comes to myself.
Before we went to Scotland 10 years ago, we were $60K in debt from both of us going back to school for six months, credit card indulgence and sheer stupidity. While overseas we still paid our mortgage here, a mortgage there and paid off our debt. It took us 4 years to do so, working our butts off and planning. Now I'm paranoid about debt. DH even asks me about big purchases - we both tell each other to go ahead all the time - we just got in the habit while paying down our debts to keep in touch about our finances. It's something we've never argued about. It's not a permission thing - more a paranoia thing on my part.

Your point is valid about permission but not applicable for us. We're now saving big time to build our home in the country, hopefully within the next 2 years. We're making quality purchases now so we don't have to repeat purchases anymore. We're planning to go 'off grid' when we build and live more on much less. So we talk a lot about purchases and saving money for our future.

As I always say here - I do appreciate all comments.

Well McPeg, congratulations on your big score. You will use the chairs a lot this summer to relax I hope.

DH and I always talk over big purchases. I know he wouldn't complain if I bought something big on my own but I think it is only fair that we communicate.

I've been in the Market for Patio Table and chairs since last Summer. I landed on the Sears Web site the other day and they seem to have the best prices. I'm looking for a round table for eight. Hard to find. Especially, if you aren't willing to pay $2,000 and up.

Gayle, the sales for the items are 'in the store'. Items have now been brought in from the warehouse itself and set up on the floor in the store and not listed on the website - these are the items each individual store had on it's floor last year for display. Go to your Sears store - once they're gone, they're gone.

Shouldn't that have been "women" rather than "folks", because that's what was really meant?

I ask permission and so does DH because for us, asking permission is what works. It's a way to clear and clarify any extra purchases. We consider it the right thing to do.

mcpeg ~ I forgot to say congrats on a great score ;o) You'll love your stainless cookware for quite a few reasons. It heats evenly and holds the heat well, it's easy to clean, it doesn't contain any chemicals that can leach into your food and then into your body, and it will always looks great. Good job!

I hate to say this, but I went out to get some dish organizers from a local home store - been waiting for cutlery to go on sale so we can replace our set that you can bend with your fingers.......

Normally $99 - this weekend $49. 18/10 gauge stainless steel 8 x 5 piece sets plus the hostess set. They were waaaaayyyyy up top but the red sticker caught my eye and the overall pattern is a classic so I know both hubby and I can live with it. I'm done now until we go furniture shopping in the spring to replace our Sanford and Son couch and chairs...

I can't believe the sales this week. I'm shaking my head in disbelief. It's really been worth waiting for these items.

Do you figure that there's a difference between,

"Go buy yourself something, dear", and

"Go buy yourself something dear"?

Does the first refer to the speaker's regard for his spouse, S O, girl friend, etc. ...

and the second to the comparative number of units of currency that one may be interested in parting with to puchase it?
