Using Ebay to buy appliances-something weird is going on.

Hi all! I realize this isn't an Ebay forum, but I can't seem to connect to theirs to ask my question.

I won bids on two appliances right before Christmas. One made me very nervous because it's quite a bit of money and it's a wall oven. I've never bought anything like that on Ebay. So far that transaction seems to be fine. I was able to pay via PayPal and I have an estimated arrival date.

The second was for a Breville toaster oven. It's part of my "poor man's" version of double ovens, LOL! This one is weird. I wasn't able to complete the transaction because the seller's PayPal account "can't accept my payment". I sent two messages about the issue before the seller responded with,

"sorry my paypal limit I will create one new item for you, you will add the card and buy it help me ok?"

I don't really understand what this means. I clicked "pay now" and I'm still getting the same message about not accepting my payment. I sent the seller another message about it. I think this person wants to circumvent Ebay, which I won't do.
Should I ask to cancel the transaction if the account remains inaccessible? Is that OK to do, or does it reflect poorly on my feedback?

I just should have gone to BB&B with my coupon! :)

I would definitely not continue with the transaction. I would contact both eBay and Paypal about it.

Usually on eBay ads it says where the item is located. Does it say?

Yes, South Carolina. The seller had 100% positive feedback, although less than 100. The wording of his message raised my brow, but I have an issue with short-cut communication.

I'll let him respond to my last query and follow through with reporting it if it's still suspicious.

Thank you for responding. I didn't want to jump the gun because I don't use Ebay that often. I would have felt bad for causing a stir over something minor.

I've stocked my home (and others) with used high-end stuff from eBay and CL (the latter usually much less expensive and easier to find locally, but for smaller items like cooktops you'll find a better selection on eBay if there's a particular one you're looking for). I regularly see Miele washers, dryers, ovens, and cooktops being sold for dirt cheap on CL by people who just moved into their homes, want something bigger, and have never heard of Miele and think it's a cheap off-brand. Many are unfamiliar with high-end brand names which helps keep prices low; I've scored used 12" and 24"w Gaggenau grills and cooktops for peanuts, a Fisher & Paykel single drawer d/w for $75 that works fine. But yes, check for serial numbers. And if possible, ask to see it running. This is easiest for fridges since you can just plug them in; more difficult for 240v or gas appliances that have already been deinstalled, or dishwashers and washing machines that aren't connected to plumbing. Get the model number of anything you're considering and download the specs, installation, and owner's manuals from the manufacturer's website or elsewhere (usually still available for anything from the '90s onward), and know how old it is. Sometimes I find almost new stuff for sale at half price that's never been installed, bought for a renovation and later found not to fit or be the wrong color. Be sure you have human help, hand trucks, and transportation in place for the larger/heavier items, as well as tools to remove refrigerator doors. Secure the washing machine tub during transportation, with original shipping bolts if available (they rarely are) or makeshift bolts and/or removable strong tape. Remove refrigerator glass shelves and carry them separately and well protected.

the reason why a 'clean' feedback record is achieved is because this jerk strings you out until beyond 90 days and you can no longer leave feedback. he has an endless string of his likely prostitute "girlfriends" answer his cell phone when you call to check on your order. sooooo, by the time he is done stringing you out 90+ days on ebay (can't leave feedback) and at the point of time where i lost THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS with this Harry Slime Man, paypal would not allow you to file any claims outside of 90 days. this is a con artist, the kin of an allegedly reputable LARGE appliance dealing chain in the St. Louis area. somehow Harry learned the ropes of the business and then got hooked up with damaged garbage that fell off the back of a truck and has pretty stock photos on ebay and what you get, IF you get anything is pure trash. we got TEN loads out of our dishwasher. he totally ripped us off on THREE pieces that we ordered and never received whatsoever the wonderful lengthy comments from "ashley" is the same blow up doll nobody who harry hands his cell phone to when the heat gets on and she (there's more than one of her) pretends to care, write down your information and "harry will get back to you". in this day and age of alleged consumer protection, i don't understand how this guy is still in business, if he is at all. the better business bureau was COMPLETELY WORTHLESS when i contacted them and i guess it goes to how much his rich family will bribe the BBB to keep his record clean. normally when you have numerous if not 1 out of 2 people this guy deals with complaining about being gypped for hundreds / thousands, the BBB rating would suffer. But the BBB is as bad as Harry Slime Man himself- just a bunch of slick talking bums. I have a feeling that the Slyman furniture dealerships do not want black sheep Harry in their outfit so they feed him the garbage by product from their business and then he goes off and rooks people on ebay for it. I never got any settlement on any of this. Harry pursued the sale and then dried up and blew away when our crap was never sent. what was eventually sent was different stuff and only ONE out of SIX appliances ever worked beyond a month. multiple ones were dead out of the box and more than one piece just was never sent at all. Like I said- by the time he strings you along for four months there's NO RECOURSE for you- so BE WARNED. if you don't get your items within a couple weeks time, file a chargeback and move on. I have no idea how this guy ever made it with a rotten reputation even through the year 2015 with the same MO, attentive customer service and then hookers answering his phone every once in a while and you just get shafted mercillessly after he strings you out past 90 days He may be OUT of business or processing payments OFF paypal (WARNING SIGN) now that paypal's chageback period is 180 days.

I have bought and sold karastan rugs on eBay with great success. They are a great value second hand as the original rugs, especially the 700 series, can last for many years. If you buy from someone with good feedback you should be fine. In the worst case, a good cleaning would take care of any odors, etc., and even with that expense, you will save a lot of money and have a high quality rug that will stand up to just about anything. Be sure to check the "sold" section to see what similar rugs have actually sold for. If you love it and the price is right, I'd go for it.

The auction page does state something about clicking "here" to read their terms and conditions, and on that T & C page it says, "Regarding part numbers: Depending on stock availability, we may occasionally substitute items to facilitate quick shipping. These items will be made by the same manufacturer as the item you ordered and will work the same in every wayÂwe guarantee it. The part number of the item may be different, which will not affect itÂs functioning. Please do not bid if this possibility bothers you." This disclaimer allows them to ship something other than what it pictured or described. However, it doesn't say anywhere that the item (featured or substituted) may be used, but it also doesn't state that the item (featured or substituted) is brand new. Only that it is manufactured by the same manufacturer that made the automobile for which it is intended. It is "OEM" -- Original Equipment Manufacturer. Having said that, this auction does tend to lead the average person to believe that the item will be new. As I stated in another thread about an eBay auction, the eBay headquarters are in California, and eBay sellers are thereby governed by the laws of this state. California Civil Code Section 1770 prohibits activities such as "bait and switch" and representing goods/services to be one thing when what you actually get is something else. This particular auction may very well fall into that, especially since the seller said that if you pay more money you will get a newer item. That's a classic bait and switch! If you paid by credit card (even if was paid through PayPal but charged against a credit card), contact the company and dispute the charge. If you paid through PayPal either by credit card or by a debit to your checking account, file a claim with PayPal that the item received is not what you purchased. And notify the seller that you will be filing a complaint of fraud with the Office of the Attorney General for the State of California.

I also would contact ebay CS. They are normally pretty responsive.

I had bought something from someone with a high FB, and then I never got it after she said it shipped. I emailed her several times for a tracking number, etc., and never got a response. Turns out she had supposedly been ill, but I still never got the item and waited almost 2 months later. Ebay/paypal refunded my money. So, yes, things can get fishy even with a supposed reputable seller. Other people also left negative FB around that time as well.

My DH manages our Paypal account but I know there is a limit you reach and then you have to sign up for some other something. I know my answer is vague but DH is out shoveling and I don't want to interrupt his progress to ask what the other something is. We are almost at that limit.

Also, his communication sounds like English isn't his first language.

But contacting Ebay and Paypal would be the way to go.

You can call PayPal yourself and talk to them.I have before. Their phone number is on ebay. Could be something simple. Maybe he is up to his limit.Ask him to explain it so you can understand what he means.

Limit to accept money?
I've been using eBay since 1996. Paypal since its inception. Never had to deal with such a thing.
"Help me out?" no.

I'd forward it all to PayPal and eBay. They take fraud extremely seriously, to the benefit of all.

You have a limited time to contact PayPal if someone falls down on the job. I thought it was 45 days, but it might be 90. I think I'd find the item with another seller, even if I had to wait.

I asked him to elaborate and ebay says to allow the seller 1-2 days to respond, so I'll wait and then contact PayPal if it isn't resolved. In the mean time, I've checked periodically to see if I can make payment and it still won't accept it. I am getting reminders to pay, though! They need an "it won't let me" button.

I've pretty much decided to write off getting the item and am going to pay a bit more and purchase it locally. I've never had so much trouble giving someone money!

Honey, why would you keep trying to hand this person money when it stinks like 3-day old relatives?

QUIT CLICKING THE BUTTONS. STEP AWAY FROM THE BUTTONS!

At least you have an idea of how much you could get it for when you go shop locally.

Save your money to spend it where you can shake a hand, get a receipt, and have it in your home within the week.

Curiosity killed the cat! LOL! I'm clicking to see if anything changed, but I didn't intend to confirm. I guess I can't believe that someone with such good feedback would flake.

Oh well, live and learn.

Talked to DH. He said once you spend $10,000 with Paypal you have to verify your account by providing bank information instead of just credit card info. Totally ridiculous IMO.

Yes, you have to verifty the bank account. And if you have a joint account with a spouse, and that spouse has already used that bank account to verify their account, they won't let you use it to verify yours. And so, I remain unverified, despite using PayPal for over 10 years.
