You want an he dryer which is just a fancy way of saying a dryer with a moisture sensor (which have been around for decades). The SQ might fit if your wall vent is in the right spot. The dryer could attach directly to it with no clearance.

Other options would be to go to AJMadisons site and use the depth filter for find a dryer that might fit.

Or a condensing or heat pump dryer.

1000% agree MamaP. Our forum looks like SPEED QUEEN only and to be honest...annoying.

An HE Dryer, IMO, is one that targets a specific temperature. Once reached, the target is then dropped by 10-15 degrees for the remainder of the cycle.

There are several candidates that follow this practice. Speed Queen, Electrolux, Whirlpool being a few.

Do you own the wall? If so, you might be able to gain several inches by recessing the works between the studs (finished, first, of course, so the wall isn't open.)

IIRC, OP is involved with a new build and is moving long distance. Both sources of high anxiety for most people, laundry appliance fit problems aside. Given the circumstances, I'm more than willing to indulge a new member to the forum who is dealing with a full plate and then some.

If it's a new build, and you own the walls, and they're not already finished, you can get more than an inch extra room in the laundry by having them turn the studs so they're long ways in the wall, rather than the standard shortways. That is, the 2x4 has the "4" parallel to the flat of the wall and the "2" perpendicular (they're not really 2"x4" but that's what they're called). This is equivalent structurally.

mrb6228 the max depth in my laundry closet is 31". With the dryer vent attached, I need at least 4" clearance in the back. Width isn't an issue.

ci_lantro the dryerbox would be ideal but I am not able to tear down a wall to install this. My understanding is that's the only way it can be done. Am I correct?

I can't make modifications to my wall and it's not a new build. Right now I am just focusing on getting the SQ washer and will settle for a non SQ dryer. When I have more space, then I can get the SQ dryer.

Yes, that box involves modifiying the wall.

Something like this periscope vent might help gain you a little space. But we really need more information about the problem to know what to suggest.

Cilantro-I am the one building the house in San Antonio, and intend to buy the SQ manual control washer but will probably select the TOL electronic control dryer. I have not ruled out buying another brand of dryer. I am not concerned about them matching; more concerned with how they will perform.

Regarding venting, don't most dryers of various brands offer the choice of rear or side venting options? I wonder if that would help Gables. A good sales person would really help him choose the best machine for his space.

My SQ is paired w/ a Kenmore dryer that has long outlived it's washer mate. Doesn't matter what they look like cause they're in the basement where nobody sees them.

I am checking to see if the periscope will work. If not, it's going to be a non SQ dryer. I am fine with the set not matching. Side venting isn't an option.

ci_lantro Are the new Kenmores built like the one you have? I want something simple and durable without all the bells and whistles.

Personally, I would not buy a new dryer. I'd look on Craigslist, estate sales, etc. for a good used one....preferably from an estate where the machine had been owned by elderly folks (less mileage). The old school dryers (electric ones; no experience w/ gas models) are very simple machines and are dead easy to work on. There isn't much to go wrong on them.
