Sad day, I had to put down my 20+ year old crock pot...
Comments (9)I did go with the Fagor a few months ago and love it - the browning feature is great although most meats in the quantities you would be slo or pressure cooking have to be done in two batches. I still find it nicer to have a plate to wash over a separate skillet though :) And - My larger pressure cookers are stored in the basement and not completely handy when I want them. On days when I'm not especially organized (and I have a few of those) when I've wanted dinner ready at dinner time and was going to be gone in the late afternoon - but had not started slow cooking something earlier in the day...I've set it to pressure cook a few minutes, then reset to slo cook on low till time I wanted to serve....tenderizing inexpensive meats further than the 'keep warm' feature would do. But it is only 6 qt. Nesco makes an identical product - I went with the Fagor because its an inch smaller in diameter, allowing it to be stored on a 12" kitchen cupboard shelf, with the door closed :) I was looking for a replacement to my 70's era West Bend bean pot style crockpot that had been a faithful kitchen help most of my adult life and got distracted by the multi-function appliance. What I kept finding in reviews is that the newer slow cookers cook hotter than the old, surprising some of us who were used to the really slow cooking....See MorePlease help. ? re: crock pot bbq chicken breast.
Comments (17)I don't like the taste of dark meat poultry, so I usually substitute breasts for dark meat in chicken recipes. But the last time that I tried boneless skinless breasts in the crockpot they ended up being overcooked; there was a lot of liquid in the curry recipe, so they weren't technically 'dry,' but the texture was not tender and it was quite disappointing. The crockpot that I used tends to run 'hot' so they overcooked really fast (about 2 hours on high). In contrast, I've used that crockpot to make the exact same curry recipe with bone-in chicken breasts, pre-browned on the stove, and those breasts were very tender although I cooked them longer than 2 hours. So if you are using boneless/skinless breasts I'd recommend that you keep a close eye on them to make sure you take them out before they're overcooked....See MoreChicken Breast In A Crock Pot
Comments (4)Not to mention a combination of High and turned to Low - or Low and turned to High towards the end. What are the other ingredients? Is it being stewed in a liquid base or baked with other ingredients like rice, stuffing mix, potatoes or other vegetables? I don't often cook in a slow-cooker, but the one chicken recipe I do use (especially in the summer) is for Baked Chicken and it is a dry cooking method. So as islay_corbel, perfectly put it, "I think it depends". There isn't just one method or temperature better than another, it depends what you want the end result to be, AND to be used for -- shredding, slicing, dicing, soup/stew, casserole, or directly from the slow-cooker to your plate as a single serving of meat. Crock-Pot Baked Chicken Put several wads of foil in the bottom of the Crock-Pot. Place seasoned chicken pieces (I usually use thighs or breasts) on top of the foil. Heat 1 hour on High and 6-8 hours on Low. The chicken will be browned like chicken baked in an oven rather than stewed in liquid. The foil keeps the chicken raised out of the liquid. -Grainlady...See MoreKAW! Chicken and dumplings in the crock pot!
Comments (26)Deedles, I didn't think they were either, the fluffed up nicely, but were still substantial, and not like lead sinkers! SJG, rather then interlocking the sheets by a slight vertical offset, they were installed in a straight line with loose tiles to fill in the gaps. So instead of a seamless pattern I have a striped one. There are pics posted if you want to see. Autumn4, mine ended up kind of like gravy. I just kept stirring, and eventually decided it wasn't getting any thicker. I did use whole milk though. I figured since I took a pass on the canned soup I'd throw caution to the wind and live a little! I'm curious to hear how yours came out! We just finished the leftovers and it heated up very well. I wish my stomach was a little bigger, my mouth wants more....See MoreAuntieJenny (z9/19 SoCal)
