My roses died from black spot- now what?
Comments (2)there is a rose forum.. if you fail to get the answer here .... i doubt they died from black spot.....mildews are a function of hot humid nights... when the plant goes into darkness with water on its leaves .... when its ma natures fault ... there isn't much you can do .. except attempt prevention ... there are organic preventions.. i am sure someone will chime in ... i think its just baking soda .... increasing air movement.. and making sure you don't get water on the leaves late in the evening [from a sprinkler] ... all that said... if you are new to gardening... let me tell you this... you will not be considered a REAL gardener.. until you have killed each plant THREE times ... you are going to have to come to grips with the fact that stuff happens.. plants die.. and the garden evolves .... consider such losses to be part of the circle of life.. and a new opportunity to plant something else ... if the canes are still green.. there is a chance the roses might come back .... maybe not ... good luck ken PS: start getting pix of all your plants... so you can start getting ID's ... so that you can start learning about your garden .... something you can do all winter... so you can feel more at ease in the garden .......See MoreI bought five lamps today
Comments (26)amy and mago, I am liking the ceramic one the more I look at it. I like that it is pulling in the color from rug. OMG Mari, isn't that terrible that I hadn't considered if the lamp is casting the light required for the room? (At times like these, I am glad we are anonymous. lol) Actually, if I have company we are usually not in that room. More likely in the FR which if next to the kitchen. BUT, that is my favorite room to read in so lighting is important. I just tried the ceramic lamp and it works pretty well. The shade is narrow enough that the bulb won't be in anyone's eyes plus it pushes the light down for reading. bac, I was thinking about stacking those pictures, too. OR moving them to a different room. (Lots of empty walls in my house.) lkplatlow, I like that dark metal lamp, too. It is a lamp that I already had in the room by the chair. I think it looks pretty good on that table. Here it is next to the chair with one of the pics I bought yesterday. Here is my other pet peeve on lamps. What is up with the cheap gold looking cords? Thanks again for all the input and feedback. I will take any advice I can get. I am soooooo not good at decorating....See MoreLeaf miners and black spots on tomato plant? Please help!
Comments (3)Yes, Monikka and Welcome here! Those appear to be the same leaf miners from our American leaf miner genus here. They are the scourge of my newly hardening transplants too and can completely destroy the vigor of a plant here. -Do not spray the plants with an insecticide - leaf miners usually multiply when you do because they are relatively protected and the bugs that eat them are killed. -Use your thumb and forefinger on each side of the leaf to crush them in their mine. Apply pressure to as small of an area possible as you will also be killing a little of the leaf when you do that, but on balance you will save all the rest. -Buy yellow trap cards (link) or make them (Link ones are crazy expensive price, try eBay, etc). Those leaf miners you have are attracted to yellow and the cards are buttered with a very persistent sticky substance. The adult flies when they come to lay eggs into the leaves go land on the yellow card first. If it is sticky, they get stuck like in amber. -I thought it was too late to start tomatoes in Austria now and get ripe tomatoes before cold temperatures start, were did you get the transplants? PS the dark brown may be a type of mold but it is soon to say. Seeing it on the stem is unnerving. Try to water roots only and not let the plant get water on the leaves or stem whenever possible. It could be something bad but time will tell and there isn't much else you can do. The spots on the leaf and browning on the stem could be bacterial speck or one of those like it, but that you will soon see as it develops more, if that happens. I hope all turns out ok! Cheers PC...See MoreRose rust and black spot
Comments (5)Darren, Initiation by Fire. Now you are a bonafide Rosarian. It's hard to say which is worse: rust, powdery mildew, or black spot. Climate dictates which fungus prevails in your area. For me black spot is 'Public Enemy #1,' a defoliant and bush KILLER, if left to do so. Spray I must for black spot from spring to fall. I don't get rust here, and powdery mildew is very seasonal...only spring and fall, and usually rather light most years. I have been unable to locate a source of Rose Clear Ultra here, in the USA. I bet your spray will work like a charm. You may want to get a good tank sprayer with a wand so that you can better get to the rose leaves' undersides. This also probably means getting the concentrate. I like the fact that Rose Clear Ultra is systemic, sprayed monthly, and 4 sprays a year are the recommended application schedule. Observe all label precautions and directions to the letter. We at the Roses Forum want to be hearing from you when you are 110 yrs. old. Those of us who are still around then! Darren, when I see a well cared for rose garden, especially in my pressure intense: black spot, rose midge fly, Japanese Beetle, rose slug, spider mite, etc., locale, I know how much work it takes to get the garden that way. My hat goes off to the Rosarian responsible for that accomplishment. Moses...See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
