Rose rust and black spot

So pissed off as I’ve already found rose rust and black spot on the new foliage of 3 of my roses. I’ve plucked off the leaves and disposed of them. Is rose rust a major concern? Or is blackspot worse?

I bought this spray today. Anyone else use it? Does it really help?

I think black spot is wors as it defoliantes the rose. Weakening it sufficiently. What varieties are you growing? There’s so many good ones now that are resistant to disease.

Emme-dc, you've posed a lot of questions, but let me see if I can briefly touch on them. First of all, Paul at one time (and may still) grew upwards of 2000 different roses. His knowledge of those roses in HIS climate is probably as comprehensive as it gets. That said, he does live in a place VERY conducive to blackspot pressure. He does list some of the roses he bred, but the list is overwhelmingly the work of other breeders, and most still in commerce. There is no true "comprehensive list" that could possibly cover all different growing conditions and climates that exist over the USA; it's a big place. It would take someone in every climate zone (hot humid summer/hot dry summer/long wet spring/cold winter/warm winter/no winter!), growing several thousand varieties of roses, under the same conditions (no spray/spray, irrigated/rainfall only, chemical fertilizer vs organics...) to ever be able to say which roses are truly black spot/mildew/rust resistant and to what degree. That's why so much about disease resistance is anecdotal, and VERY area specific. That's where HelpMeFind.com comes in. In case you don't know of it, I'll put the link below. You just type in the the varietal name of your rose, and the page for that rose (hopefully) has all the info you need, including hardiness, size, disease resistance, and the family it belongs to. As for finding other roses in that family, you can also search HMF by "class", and if you become a supporting (paying) member, you can search multiple options and criteria. If you want a dark red, disease resistant, short climbing China rose...well, there you go, all the possibilities are yours for the choosing. HelpMeFInd and this forum are two of your best friends. "Black Spot" is a disease of roses, although it could potentially also infect apples since they are the same family of plants. Often other plants do get some black spots but those are caused by many other bacteria or viruses, or mechanical damage, and I've not seen that Baking Soda is very effective in controlling those. For example, Maples (Acer species) every year get Black Tar Spot which is not controlled by Baking Soda or much opf anything else. But that also does not do much harm to the infected trees.

You are dealing with two difficult problems here. What you need is a no nonsense product. For Blackspot you need to use a proven stuff like Triforine. Get the concentrate and dilute it. It's much cheaper this way. And you will need it every year when it's time to get the first flush of leaves and blooms. Blackspot is very strong when the wheather is hot and humid. When you see it, it's too late. So you will expect that after spraying, more leaves will fall before it stabilises. Then the disease will subside and you still nee dto spray monthly to control it. Rust is very hard to treat. They claim that Mancozeb or triforine will help but I find them equally useless. They will help but will never get rid of the problem. The only way I have found to get rid of rust is to do a strict conrol practice. Whenit's warm, the only way is to remove all infected leaves, spray Triforine and pray. It probably won't help. So wait until Winter, do a hard prune to get rid of all leaves on the plant. Look at the surrounding ground and make sure rust does not affect any of the weeds or plants that could keep their leaves in Winter. If you see, destroy those weeds and plants as well. Rust leaves roses to lay low on some other plants like the weeds, then come back to roses in Spring.

Just reading up on this. I took off the whole cane, let's see what happens. I'll be super disappointed if all these roses turn into Dr Hueys. Resistant does not mean immune :-)) It depends a lot on the rose and the climate. I have even seen Rosa rugosa plagued by blackspot.........IME, no rose is fully disease resistant!

Initiation by Fire. Now you are a bonafide Rosarian.

It's hard to say which is worse: rust, powdery mildew, or black spot. Climate dictates which fungus prevails in your area. For me black spot is 'Public Enemy #1,' a defoliant and bush KILLER, if left to do so. Spray I must for black spot from spring to fall.

I don't get rust here, and powdery mildew is very seasonal...only spring and fall, and usually rather light most years.

I have been unable to locate a source of Rose Clear Ultra here, in the USA.

I bet your spray will work like a charm. You may want to get a good tank sprayer with a wand so that you can better get to the rose leaves' undersides.

This also probably means getting the concentrate. I like the fact that Rose Clear Ultra is systemic, sprayed monthly, and 4 sprays a year are the recommended application schedule.

Observe all label precautions and directions to the letter. We at the Roses Forum want to be hearing from you when you are 110 yrs. old. Those of us who are still around then!

Darren, when I see a well cared for rose garden, especially in my pressure intense: black spot, rose midge fly, Japanese Beetle, rose slug, spider mite, etc., locale, I know how much work it takes to get the garden that way. My hat goes off to the Rosarian responsible for that accomplishment.

Thanks everyone for your replies. :) Here’s hoping this spray works. I’ve done everything else to make them happy. So one really hopes to see good results from all that has been put into them. We shall see.

Moses, thankfully I didn’t have powdery mildew on the roses I had last year, but did have the rust and black spot. 2 of my roses went completely bald of leaves by August. Which is why I’m panicking now. I had 10 roses last year. Now I have over 70. So I’m scared they’ll all end up a mess. I’ve spent a fortune :-s
