Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Looking for furniture repair in my area

I have a 2 year old sofa with a broken arm! Is there anyone in the Allentown PA area who repairs furniture? I'm not having much luck with Google searches. It seems to be made out of heavy cardboard or particle board that is stacked. When I leaned over this arm I felt something shift. (Imagine having a deck of cards on the table and then pushing on the top of the deck and the cards fan out). I want to have both arms repaired since I'm sure the one will collapse some day! Any help will be appreciated.

It is very difficult to make repairs like this cost effectively. Maybe you could find a freshly retired guy who doesn't need to work for the money.

Thanks for your input Joseph. You're right about the cost I'm afraid. I did get one quote for $375! I'm just going to replace it. :(

So annoying, though, since it's not that old but I really think I should just cut my losses. Whatever happened to pride in workmanship? smh

I think edgemont is in the ballpark with those figures. Quality furniture repair is sometimes more involved than one might first consider. You may find that you have more invested in the repair than the piece is worth. It takes a special person to do a proper repair of old furniture, including knowlwdge and skill. An hourly rate is scarry to some. However remember the repairman has his neck out a bit at setting a price prior to doing the repair as well There is more to a quality repair than just looking at the problem and guessing how much to charge. Suppose the repair only takes half the time I estimated, now I am in your pocket, is that fair? There is no real answer but only what you feel comfortable with. Go visit the repair man and his shop if he will let you. Talk to him about the pricing and which he thinks is most fair. Ask him to give you some ideas and thoughts on your repairs. If he is a quality repairman he should have no problem explaining his position. After your visit it is your decision to proceed or not. Good luck

I get your drift on this and it probably will work OK. Although it'll likely be tedious. Do the sides of the drawers extend down past the floor of the drawer? Could you saw off this portion with the bottom of the floor and then replace it with a new piece of hardwood? It'll still take some hand work but will give you (in my opinion) a better fix...More accurate to the right size. Could you disassemble the drawer? Make a whole new side?.... I agree, make 'em usable, but also make 'em last.

Thanks to Chijim for alerting me to this post! LOVE the chair frame; it one of my favorite styles that I re-do. Is it possible that the chair is...a faux painted non-wood product? I haven't run into that in my projects, but I would guess it's possible. Can you run your finger over the white areas to see if they are a hair's width lower than the surrounding untouched areas? In other words, are they the actual chair material, or have you been able to see actual wood in other areas nearby? I have some furniture touch-up markers, similar to these, but I see that they say they are for wood. Furniture Repair Kit Wood Markers - Set Of 13 - Markers And Wax Sticks I also have acrylic paints in many colors, and I could see blending some to touch up the areas, but then you'd have to seal those areas with something that would protect them, like a water-based poly.

Popcorn ceiling is being replaced...has it been tested for Asbestos? As for flooring, you can look to the floors BESIDE the vinyl to find out how to go about this. If you are into MCM retro, you can go with cork flooring. You can use a floating cork floor here (click together). I like to add a coat or two of Loba 2K Supra AT onto a cork floor...but if your choice of cork doesn't allow for that, you can have the edges of the click system sealed in the kitchen. The dining area would then be floated normally.

Pride in workmanship still exists. Just not in Indonesia, China, Vietnam, or other places where much of the low to mid cost imported furniture of today comes from. $400 to repair a high quality sofa would be a very small sum compared to the price of purchasing it in the first place. And, you would most likely NOT be looking to repair it either. I have a 40 year old Century sofa whose basic frame is as good as the day it was made.

The repair cost would be fine if it was a quality piece, but then, the repair wouldn't necessary in the first place after only 2 years! I agree that it matters where it's made. Trust and believe my next purchase will be Made in America! I'm even considering having one custom made. Thanks for your input Sophie. :)

Lisa, you also need to make sure the frame is 100% hardwood. Many manufacturers outsource their frames & they are imported & many are not using hardwood frames. Some good companies to look at would be Sherrill, Taylor King & Wesley Hall. In case you need this number in the future( they do cater to business & they bill the repair service a small fee for the referral) there is a furniture repair hotline who can give you a repair service referral; since they do bill the repair service it is important that if you do not use the service that you notify them. www.furniture-hotline.com
