Good question, Medusa. The coarse sprays end up dripping off of the leaves. Fine sprays adhere better...so you use less. Coarse sprays also produce fine particles. I used a hose end sprayer in New Orleans for very few roses and in retrospect I realize that I wasted huge amounts of chemicals. With a pump sprayer, I could have covered them with a tsp of spray diluted rather than the several ounces the hose end consumed for each application. Generally we try to use the least toxic sprays that work and we do have the serious face masks (that stop both particulate and chemical fumes) that we first bought when stripping paint, cleaning spaces between century old walls in New Orleans. IF we were using the atomizer, we'd be using even less chemicals, but would have to use face masks. With a fine spray, we should use face masks, but sometimes don't. We are on a hill top with predictable breezes. If we had an urban lot, a serious face mask would be a necessity, not one of the white things from Home Depot. As we and our rose garden mature, we've segregated the roses that need spray from those that don't. And the spray areas area are much smaller. And I continue to redesign the garden for more roses that please me and that can make it through the year in fine style with less or no spray.

Spot Shot sprayer from Rosemania. I've had one for 10 years (or however long they've been selling it). You can get the batteries pretty cheap at Home Depot and other places (like $25 instead of $45) and you can even buy a 12V motorcycle charger at Walmart (much better and safer than the un-controlled walwart that comes with the Spot Shot). I make sure to completely rinse the jugs when finished and then run an entire jug of clean water through the spray nozzle before putting it up each time. That's the only maintenance I've ever done on it besides replacing the battery. During the peak season, I spray 10 - 12 gallons at a time, which takes two jugs, at least. No problems whatsoever. It even sprays 12 gallons of Bayer + Pentathlon (manzate powder) on a single charge and that stuff is thick! It's the greatest thing on two wheels for roses. :-)

Thanks for reply "MY 4" has nice website so that seems like option with the cart bundle/ I am 75. My Spotshot was $450 so would love to fix it, think it may just be battery problem but to change is daunting. I am also from Dallas; do you have any ideas on lawn repair shops that might consider repairs. LOVE LOVE LOVE our cooler weather this past week- My roses and big dogs sooo happy.
