Window treatment advice
Comments (20)The house is 12 years old. If it's low e glass it's not preventing fading. There's noticeable evidence on the carpet and wood floors where previous owner had furniture and area rugs. The info on the solar shades is very helpful as DH started talking about exactly that kind of thing today. I'll look into that as well. All great advice - thank you! We had another lake home for 16 years. It was really close to the neighbors and not conducive to growing old there. Four level home with 43 steps down to the lake. We're in our late 50s and decided last year that we should start looking for a place they can carry us out of as DH says. We looked for a year and finally settled on this place. It's a beautiful timber frame home on a wonderful private wooded lot. The waterfront is not as sandy and weed free as our old place but we decided after a year we had to compromise on something and that was it. We sold our other place to a neighbor without a realtor. Three weeks before we had to move out we bought this place, moved our stuff into a moving truck for a week before moving it in here about six weeks ago. Its the dream home I never expected to have. Now I just need to retire so I can spend more time there!...See MoreWindow treatment advice needed
Comments (19)Since you're only looking for a temporary solution on occasion, and you do have a nice sized sill, and you only need to cover the bottom portion of the window for privacy, I'd make a panel to put on the sill in front of each window. You can get a styrofoam sheet from the home store, cut it to fit. Then you can wrap it like a present in fabric, and just pin the fabric to the backside into the styrofoam to hold it using t pins. You can wrap the styrofoam first with batting to make it look more quilted or not. You can then even pin or glue some trim onto the front to dress it up or not. Or you can pleat the fabric as you pin it to make it fancier. The panels will be lightweight, store flat and can color coordinate with your room. Just rest them on the sill and lean it on the window. You can make them as high as you want, even cover the window entirely. They go away easily and won't damage your lovely woodwork....See MoreOptions for smart control of 2 independant HVAC systems
Comments (21)Take some sugar before you read this post... it will help this medicine go down. As far a voice control goes that would probably be the way to do it as rockypointdog suggests. A lot of this kind of stuff is moving faster than anyone can stay on top of it. Expensive : is a relative term, based upon what you are trying to do / trying to accomplish. There are a myriad of ways to cut costs, but you may not be able to do entirely what you want. With that said, many cases you are limited by what your structure provides you with. So just because something is deemed expensive doesn't mean you could pull it off anyway due to some limiting problem of the structure... like not enough room among other things. As an example: I would never attempt to twin furnaces together horizontally. Nor would I mismatch the furnaces. Any installation I do, I plan to maintain that equipment / repair it when it breaks. There are those in this industry who will sell you 'ANYTHING' no matter what. When problems start, the blame game begins... and /or they are long gone and can't be reached. So there is the expensive category done right that works. Then there is the 'here you go' we hope it works solution... then temperature extremes hit (hot or cold or both) and you're left to wonder what happened to your prize. Then there is the DIY and or silver bullet crowd... we're looking for a small cost gadget that will force my air conditioner and or heat to do what we want it to. I don't expect to gain any mass followers with these words... but let me remind you the truth (reality) is often stinging when you hear it. It is for your own good. You could waste hundreds of dollars chasing your tail, only to wind up damaging your HVAC system(s)....See Morewolf 48” in blower or remote blower hood vent
Comments (46)We fully agree that homeowners should do extensive research including the use of Houzz and other social forms But that also should in our opinion includes speaking to licensed professionals in the supporting fields for their project And that is exactly what we did And we did meet with licensed Structural Engineers , Hvac, general contractor, Electricians and plumbers etc. Every one of them as well researched from their licensing to customer reviews/feedback Houzx is a great form to use but again you don’t really know the background of the people you’re speaking with and their opinions are worth noting but should be validated There comes a point in our experience and knowledge that we have to bow out because we are not professionals in this field Anybody who takes offense to our bowing out should not ...we know limits and cannot provide more than we already have. Please start another strand for future questions as we will not be commenting on this any further....See MoreJanie Gibbs-BRING SOPHIE BACK
