Semi-formal? I think your white, black, and pink dress is cute, but I wouldn't call it semi-formal. I'd go with the blue instead.

Semi formal means that tuxedos are not required but it is still formal enough for one to be appropriate. Is the reception immediately after or later in the evening? Is it in an indoors venue or outdoors?

I think the polka dots might be too casual but you never know. Do you know the families well? Are they country club types? Or did they request semi formal hoping that Uncle Buddy won't wear jeans?

This is a family wedding. Even tho I'm very early 60's, it's a great nephew who is getting married. DH's sister and brother are 12 and 14 years older than him, so the generations in our family are all over the place. Anyway, the wedding is at 4PM outdoors with the reception immediately following. I like the blue ( which is actually a periwinkle), but was wondering if I could get away with the polka dot. I got the periwinkle on sale for $40, but will probably spend way more than that on shoes!!!!

Now I'm going to read between the lines. You mention your age and tell us other guests are all different ages. So, my answer to her not asked question is, "yes, you could "get away" with the polka dot dress."

But, that doesn't mean that you should.

I am in my 60's too. I enjoy having an opportunity to get dressed up, especially when I can wear a new dress.

You will look lovely in whatever you choose, but the periwinkle takes it up to the next level.

The periwinkle it is!!!! I might wear the polka dot for DIL's baby shower, but that's not until early Sept, so I would wonder if it's too 'summery'.

Really, black shoes??? That would be easy!! I was considering something like this. They are described as iridescent. I just ordered them from Zappos. They will arrive on Tues. I want to be comfortable!!!! But I am open to suggestions.

You can put semi-formal on a wedding invite, and people are going to wear what they are going to wear. Majority of people are not going to buy new dress clothes to wear to a wedding. I can verify this from our wedding and others I knew from a wedding planning board 10 years ago.

OTOH, the periwinkle dress seems great for the occasion. If the reception were in a yard in a tent, I would wear the polka dot.

I agree about the sling backs. Of course a low kitten heel. Bring the flats along if your feet start to hurt you can change into them.

The polka dots will be fine in early September if the weather is very warm. Not sure where you are, but here in the northeast, September can be very hot.

gscience, I totally agree with you. And, whenever I agonize about choices I say that it really shouldn't matter.

That said, I still like to dress for the occasion, even though I know many will be dressed more casually.

I prefer the periwinkle dress for a wedding. The polka dot appears too casual. Instead of black shoes, I would opt for a nude color or a soft metallic.

I think the periwinkle dress is perfect and I might try to find a strappy sandal or wedge heel (probably in nude) since the ceremony is outdoors.

I think either dress would be just fine. An outdoor wedding in Wisconsin, despite being called semi-formal, will be more casual than not. I'd hold off on perfume and bring the bug spray too.

My go to shoe is very often a nude color low heel.

I'd go with "opposites attract" so I'd look for shoes/purse in a bronze metallic...probably a heeled sandal.

Love the periwinkle dress! I think it's perfect for the wedding you describe. Since the dress has a little bit of a pattern (tone on tone), I would go with a simple leather or patent low-heeled shoe or sandal in nude. You could pull off a silvered sandal, and yes, switch to the flats if the ground is soft or your feet hurt from dancing!

i have that same dress in the paisley and wore to a wedding. Got many compliments on it and it was very appropriate for me at 53. With the high neckline I didn't need any jewelry but you could go either way. I had a summer silk scarf in pink as my dress was multi colored

I am tall and very thin and find that Tommy Hilfinger dresses fit me well.

cmm - I'm still trying to figure out shoes, but am also thinking about jewelry, too. I may end up with my string of graduated pearls. A statement necklace may be too much.

I respectfully disagree. It is tone on tone, not a print. It reads as a solid. I think a long pearl necklace would be fine. Nothing too short.

The wedding is tomorrow and I'm still not 100% sure about which shoes I'm wearing. I bought these and they are comfortable, but I hardly ever wear heels, so I'm having a hard time justifying spending the money. Not sure how often I'd wear them............The color is called Bone Cashmere.

Bac, they look like a classic shoe. Not trendy. If they are comfortable they are worth their weight in gold.

I would still bring a pair of flats. If you bought them a while ago, I would have suggested that you break them. So, although they feel comfortable they might not be when you wear them for an entire day.
