Family Treasures - What to do?
Comments (17)Oh Demi, you are my kindred spirit. I relate so well to your tears over that sofa. That being said, I have had to force myself to let items leave my capable hands. I felt as though it was my duty to keep the items left behind by my entire deceased family. I have items from three aunts, a mother and father, a first cousin and a sister. Did I mention that my aunts saved everything that shined? Sigh. I had quite a collection of very well cared for and loved antiques. I have managed to give a few things away, but I still do not have the ability to rid myself of the bulk of it. This situation is not like yours. You have one lovely item, that I am sure will find someone to care and love it. Me? Well, my situation requires purging and I know it. This summer for sure. All of these keepsakes are not the memories of my husband and sons and it is unfair to make them live buried by some of these things. Heck, some of it I don't even remember seeing at my relatives' houses! Like you, everyone knew that I was the sentimentalist and kept giving me stuff. We both need to be selective. Let's repeat the mantra: You can't keep everything. As I said, this summer for sure....See MoreWhat Do YOU Collect?
Comments (64)I keep things (wheat pennies, concert ticket stubs, star christmas ornaments) but the only thing I really collect, that I treasure -- are memories! They come back to me unexpectedly...last night I put some lotion on my hands and realized it was Vaseline Intensive Care and the scent took me back to when my last baby was born, and the nurse rubbed some on my arm after helping me bathe (c-sec.) and then she brought my baby girl to me, and I was right there again! Full of joy and hope for her (and her 2 big brothers, 5 & 7 at the time) and thrilled to have a daughter, along with my husband who was a goner the first time he saw her. I just love remembering, it's amazing to realize how much I've been blessed! Susan...See MoreLove It or List It
Comments (35)@ floglatt I am not sure anyone knows the compensation homeowners get other than people involved, as the homeowners must sign a non disclosure agreement. The popular theory is that they pay for matetials only, we do know that the "problems" they run into are scripted, most all of the issues are known before they start. Also, some of the houses they tour are not even for sale or the prices are not what the show advertises....See MoreMy head feels all foggy with so many decisions to make.
Comments (57)rpwoodward, OK, good for you. With your experience there are at least two categories of software to consider: 1) Spreadsheets, or databases; and 2) Project management software. There are advantages and disadvantages to each category, so you will have to sort out what's best for you. Becky makes a good and important point (as always) when it comes to samples. These present a unique challenge, and a 3-ring binder works very well, since they will be hard to digitize (but not impossible if your dedicated to do so with your iPhone). It's a very good idea to start a 3-ring binder for all of the manufacturer's literature, warranties, etc., of your final, installed choices of everything from appliances to roofing, for future reference. Good luck! Let us know what you choose to do and why! :-)...See MoreUser
