What should I do in my dining room?
I just bought these chairs, they are an off-white color. The walls are Cityscape from SW, it's a gray-blue color. What would you do with this wall, and curtain ideas? Everything I love is around $900+ and I'd like to keep it around $300. I bought 2 silver sunburst mirrors, I thought about putting those on the sides and finding a nice piece of art for in the middle, but those can be returned.

Comments (35)In addition to accessories, the first thing I would consider if you canâÂÂt/donâÂÂt want to paint the ceiling to bring in more teal, and you are going to hate me for this, is to change the banding on the drapes to teal, or at least add a couple inch band of teal between the red and the print. That will also help the teal pop out of the drapery fabric. I would NOT paint the panels above the fireplace in the teal. What I would do is get a thicker piece for the mantel shelf, and drop it down so that the bottom of it starts at the top line of the tile, and paint it the same color as the rest of the panels (white?) I would then look for three platters or six smaller plates to hang in the panels with teal as the primary color. Or, use two of these on each of the outside panels, hung one over the other, and then a teal vase in the center with some branches and greenery to give some height. teal seashell plates Maybe this vase from Pier1: Teal reactive vase Pier1 will have all the faux and dried grasses, twigs and small floral accents to pull in the colors you want into the vase. If you donâÂÂt like the plates, look at the seashell and starfish/coral wall art pieces on the Pier 1 site - they would work instead of the plates on the two side panels. Please also take a little time to paint all the vents teal to disappear on the wall. They are not decorative items. :-) A taller more vertical mirror over the sideboard, and either one bigger lamp on one side, or a pair of lamps on either side. Consider finding something if you do a single larger lamp, that has a ceramic base. Comments (8)oh. your trim would work with a lot of colors I suppose. Cream. Sage. Vibrant green(even though I hear you want to move away from green, but as a possibility) . Subtle light blue-or maybe turquoise. Coral. Mustard might work. Wallpaper can be truly fabulous. Depends what feel are you after. 6 years agoWhat a gorgeous room you have! I think the starburst are too small and I don't think you should do two of them.
Those large mirrors look great, but expensive. Some people don't care for mirrors in dining rooms - looking at yourself (and others) eating. A very large piece of special art would look wonderful or an arrangement of smaller pieces to fill the space like a single piece would. I'd just be careful that you not replicate too closely the shape and spacing of the backs of your chairs, as it could become very busy looking. I know large art can be expensive and daunting to find, but stick with it until you find something that suits you.
Don't know if you have the space, but a shallow buffet below your art would be a nice addition, too, some day when your budget allows.
Check places like World Market and Pier One for large inexpensive art. If you're careful, you might find something that is as lovely as your room. Not sure if these are your taste but I found this at Pier One for $199 4'x5':This is the same price, I think, but maybe a bit smaller? I've lost track but all of these are large and under $200 except the last one is maybe $230?
Not sure if they are big enough, but you could mock up your space carefully with painter's tape to decide how big you need to go to get the right balance.

1. I'm a fan of IKEA for curtains (e.g. their linen drapes but also like their velvet ones, Sanela).

3. I'm like a broken record, but I really like engineering prints for photos or maps (e.g. of places that are meaningful to you); there are also colored engineering prints now. I downloaded a historic map of the place DH and I met and modgepodged it on particle board.

6 years agoIf the starburst mirrors are the same size, they could work. I don't think something smaller will though. This is from Joss and Main and is 35x47 so it's quite good size and only $115.
