I hope that helps. There are 3 trees and all of them have these dead leaves and nearly bare branches. A tree trimmer came out and said the canopies needed to be trimmed but he didn't know what was happening with the leaves. He suggested fertilizer.

i had a kwanzan flowering cherry i planted it march of last year. it did great last year, but in april of this year we got 10" of rain and our yard has lots of standing water in it. after that the leaves turned brown and fell off and it died. i think is was root rot. have you had excessive amounts of rain lately?

We have, and spring was very late...but we have had a lot more rain in years past without any issues...also my trees are on berms around my yard, so they get very good drainage. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so we get more rain than most every year, lol.

ornamental cherrys are very susceptible to diseases and pests. so there's probably a lot of possibilities.

It IS brown rot but not a very bad case - the weeping cherries get it much worse!! You should be able to prune out much of the diseased stems. But be prepared to do battle with this on pretty much an annual basis. Few ornamental cherries trees flourish here without some sort of disease issues.
