Help with kwanzan cherry..

The tree is 2 yrs old, about 8 ft. tall. Lots of blooms this spring and looked good. This tree has about 7 branches that all had leaves after the blooms, but now only 2 of the branches have leaves left. The leafless branches were getting a green growth at the end of them like they were going to sprout new growth, but now they are still leafless and the green sprouts turned brown. Branches are still pliable, not dead. this also happened last year after the blooms, I thought it was dead but it came in looking good this spring. Any reason why this did this 2 years in a row now? It gets plenty of water and is in direct sun. I don't find any kind of insect either.

Some kind of pathogenic organism may be at work. Cherries in general are disease susceptible, with a host of potential problems. If there has been plenty of rain perhaps the planting site does not drain well enough for it.

Thanks for the response. That's interesting.... Neighbor told me to place mulch around it to help keep moisture in since we have 90+ degree heat from June to September. Too much water maybe?

If you get another Kanzan, I would not prune it. If it is well shaped when planted it shouldn't need any further intervention in its life, unless it gets damaged in some way, IMO. It also shouldn't need fertilising - if it looked sad it was in the wrong place. A happy Kanzan will look after itself.

I know that I've told this story several times in this forum but it's worth posting again, I hope. I was called out to a large commercial site where nearly all of the hundreds of newly planted trees were showing signs of serious problems. Both the landscape architect and the landscape contractor were ordered (not by me, but the owner of the property) to be on this inspection, too. I discovered that all of the trees (which were 3 inch caliper B&B) had been planted with EVERYthing still intact: the full metal basket, burlap, poly rope and even the lifting straps. When I commented on this, the contractor said that the LA told him to do it that way. The LA said that leaving all of that intact made it easier to lift the trees when they died. By the way, the trees were declining for completely different reasons. But had they managed to survive for a few years, the rope and straps could easily have done them in.

i had a kwanzan flowering cherry i planted it march of last year. it did great last year, but in april of this year we got 10" of rain and our yard has lots of standing water in it. after that the leaves turned brown and fell off and it died. i think is was root rot. have you had excessive amounts of rain lately?

Doesn't sound good, might be worth taking samples to your nearest USDA lab for testing for fungal or bacterial diseases.

It's not a "nurseryman's error", it's an alternative spelling now being called "obsolete".

Whatever. The important point is that the spelling with a 'w' is invalid under the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.
