Decor ideas for dining room built-in

This is the dining room in the home I'll be moving into in a few days - I need help decorating the built in! I want it to have wine/bar cart decor, but don't want it to look too messy, like it does now. Any ideas for what I should put on top of the built in and how I should style it? I have photos of the furniture I will be putting in the space below!

Here is my dining room table that will go in the space (I am painting the top and chairs white and distressing it) and the rug that will go below - sorry for the poor quality!

Hi Kirsten.

I had friends with exactly the same layout in their house when I lived in Peoria. They had the same issue as you: what to do with the humongous built-in, but theirs was fumed oak, on top of that. I suggested they do what your house's previous owners did -- paint the thing white -- but that wasn't something they were willing to do, since they had all oak furniture, and wanted to keep the moody feel.

What I did manage to persuade them to do was have a metal shop create an extra-long planter to hold a bunch of individual pots to avoid the spotty look of the too-many ditsy plants in the window, which problem it looks like you'd otherwise be dealing with. Theirs was unfinished copper, to tone in with the wood they wanted to keep, but I think you could get away with polished brass.

Lucky you! I love the built in and your hardwood floors. I love having a plant or two on top and try to arrange your wine decor. I'm seeing a few bottles in the corner, maybe or a tray - or a lovely wine decanter.

Lovely space. I'd fill those cabs sparsely, just because I don't like my good china on display in the dining room. So for me, a few books stacked flat, small sculpture, a beautiful bowl, a painting that no one needs to look at much (or closely), some vases might lurk behind the glass. One fabulous tureen that never gets used....umm,guess you can tell I'm typing and looking at my corner cabs at the same time! Some one else might feature a prized collection of most anything. Legos to monsters. I recall a picture where someone featured her handbags. Basically,all the ideas you might put on open shelves will work here,too. As would papering or painting the backs of the cabs. Guess the point is to keep it authentically YOU. And as others have mentioned,no need to rush. If you want to add color with curtains and rug, then select large art work for the open wall first.....like 2/3 the width of your wall area. One large piece or two or three or four that combined will make the 2/3 wall area....the art colors can guide you for rug curtains etc......try Cost Plus World Market, Ross, TJMaxx, Tuesday Morning, Burlington etc......

IMO the drapes are all wrong anyway so don’t bother playing with them at all. They are already too short and too flimsy looking .. You need art and IMO a buffet would be a better choice than the bar . That would also allow the large art to be hung at the proper height. The pet pics are too small for the walls so maybe find a smaller wall somewhere to hang those . IMO linen drapes would be nice at least 2 1/2 x as wide as the rod and just skimming the floor .I think a chandelier that is more MCM and actually lights the table would be nice. I love George Nelson bubble lights or the light that is in the Susan Davis pic would also work.

Bergen Furniture - thank you for you advice, can you clarify? Do you mean move the mirror and lamps out of the room and use the 4 other pictures? Also, I should let folks know that I was going to make all 4 pictures white matted prints similar to the small clock tower print - I have that in 3 other styles so they coordinate). I'll move some things around and upload more pictures. Thank you!!

Who decorates with wine? Or I should say, who has a bottle long enough to decorate with. Mercy, I'd have to fill mine up with red food coloring in water and tap the cork back in.
