Removing musty smell from towels and clothes
Comments (13)zjdeere- I had the same problem with a pair of jeans- the smell increased over a short period of time. The jeans were practically new and I didn't want to throw them in the trash. I got on the Laundry forum and several people recommended Charlie's Soap- after a few washes with that detergent they quit smelling and I keep using that detergent and they haven't smelled since. The only thing we could think of was maybe something used in the manufacturing process of the clothing....See Morequestion regarding "musty" smelling washers
Comments (13)I have a front loader (LG) that is about 14 years old. It does not have a clean cycle. It smells a little; definitely collects yuck in the gasket and in the crevices of the machine. I have not had "spots" come out on the wash, but wonder what the OUTSIDE of the stainless drum would look like if the machine was opened up. I googled directions to remove the tub, but feel that is beyond my pay grade to attempt. ;-) (Would probably have to call service to get it back together again). I am suspicious that it is not really clean inside there -- sadly I did not know better when we first got the machine, so did not upkeep it as well as we do now. We do leave the door open fully, unless the machine is in use. Any advice as to how to clean it (and yes, if its worth a service call to get the stainless tub removed so it can be washed on the outside), would be greatly appreciated -- I know the laundry room has a lot of experienced members! (edited to add, I use costco free & clear liquid, not too much, and also oxyclean powder in the drum with the clothes for washing, I know that's a little simplistic but at least I'm consistent)....See MoreMusty Smell in Afghan Blanket
Comments (39)Before I did any more washing, I would just place the afghan over a wood drying rack outside on a sunny day. It can be cold, you just don't want cloudy or any rain. You will have to fold in half lengthwise and place over the top and out to both sides. Bring in when the sun goes down and leave on rack to keep airing in the house. Sunlight kills mold spoors, if that is what it is. You may have an old mothball smell. Mothballs smell musty to me and the sun and fresh air will also remove that. I wouldn't add any more chemicals to the mix. I think it just needs to air out a time or two. If that doesn't work, you can always go further. I have the acrylic afghans just like yours from the same time period....See MoreMusty Smell After Remediation
Comments (19)So it might be getting better. ServPro came out and noticed that they didn't cover the sewer hole. They covered it and the smell dropped about 70%. But I would have thought that the sewer would have had a whole different rank smell, not so musty. I asked them if they treated any mold and they said no because the amount of mold was not significant enough to warrant calling in the mold team. If it still smells when they come back, I'm going to demand that they treat the mold. I had a mega moldy wall in our laundry room/garage that was covered in mold to at least 4 feet high. I removed the drywall and saturated the remaining studs (which also had visible mold) with hydrogen peroxide. I did it about 3-4 times over a few days and now our laundry room smells great. No musty smell at all. Literally, the laundry room is the best smelling place in the house right now....See Moresparky823
