A summary of issues in electro convulsive therapy (ECT)?
Comments (4)Certain behaviors, such as depressive or destructive thinking becomes habitual and because the behavior blocks the normal response, any kind of treatment is difficult. Therefore if you can interrupt this behavior, then the patient can be treated better. The ECT seems to do this. The patient is somewhat foggy for a few days and the memory for that time may be absent or just foggy for a couple of days. Then, the patient is more receptive for treatment, either medically or psychological. Hopefully, the habit has been broken, at least for a while. How many treatments will depend on how she responds to the first. She may need several. She may not. My mother-in-law had several and it worked quite well. It was years before the depression returned. Then, it was taken care of quickly and she only needed one or two. It's been so long that I have forgotten all the details of her ECTs She will be sedated so much that she probably will not be aware of what is happening. If it is done on an out patient basis, she will need someone to be with her afterwards. After a few days her memory and cognitive function will be back to normal. She may not remember the details of the treatment or any unpleasant depressive thoughts that she had immediatly prior to the ECT. That's one thing that is hoped for, that she forget the thoughts that she was having that kept her depressed. Normal memory about normal things does not seem to be bothered. It used to be used a lot. But it was found that it's usefulness depended so much on what was done afterwards. Not all patients got appropriate treatment. Nor did it do any good to those that had actual brain malfuction of some sort. It was not a cure all. But it is still used for the depressed patient where nothing else seems to work....See MoreDeep Tissue Massage
Comments (16)The deep tissue massage will get in there and get the knots and kinks out, they will work deep into the muscle. Hot Stone uses the heat of the stones to sooth the muscles, you will get some kinks worked out, but its purpose is more relaxing. As a therapist I would recommend the Hot Stone if you just want to relax, or if you are "elderly"/frail. If you have lots of stress and tension built up in your muscles, or if you are in good physical shape, even if you've never had one before you will be ok. Your therapist should tell you to undress to your level of comfort, you will be covered by a sheet and possibly a light blanket. For me, if the ladies leave their bra on, I just ask if I can unfasten it while I work their back and then refasten it when I finish. Depending on the policy of the hotel, the therapist may ask if you want your glutes worked (your butt muscles, don't be offended by this, athletes such as cyclists or runners often want those muscles released, as will some folks that are on their feet for long periods of time) If you have questions, or are nervous let your therapist know, we want you to be comfortable. Be prepared to let them know things such as if you have had surgery, it may affect how deeply they will work in those areas Enjoy! Ellie...See MoreWhat would you do? (regarding physical therapy)
Comments (31)I have had frozen shoulders - the first one in '04 after the 3 hurricanes that came through our area and I cleaned the soffit of our house by hand. Overuse of the right shoulder. I didn't go to the doctor until I could no longer stand the pain and could not even wash my hair. had a manipulation done to break the adhesions and intense PT for 8 days afterwards. But I did have PT for 3 months before the manipulation and you are right Alisande, it did make it worse. It was explained to me that as they work around the area different trigger points are worked. They are literally chasing down the areas that are "knotted" and until they get all the areas worked out, you will have more pain and soreness. Unfortunately, the areas can knot back up between sessions and in my case the adhesions just kept pulling everything back up into knots. Two years later, the other should froze on me. I didn't wait that time and went directly to having the manipulation. I now have full motion but every once in a while my right one flares up and the massage therapist said it was probably due to over use of the computer. Alisande - if you check out excerises called Active Isolated Stretching by Aaron L. Mattes, these are wonderful for stretching all parts of a muscle. The difference between these and what the PT does is that you don't hold these for as long and you work each part of the muscle seperately. I got more relief from them than I did any of the PT ones. Before doing the excerises warm your shoulder by putting a wet towel in the microwave for a couple minutes. Wrap that towel in another and lay over the shoulder. Be careful not to burn yourself. After excerising, ice it for about 15 minutes. If you can find Biofreeze, its like BenGay but much better. It really helped at night so that I could sleep. I avoided cortisone shots because they actually damage the tissue. However, when the doctor had me under for the manipulations, he gave me one each time. Hope you get some relief - I feel your pain!...See MorePhysical Therapy vs Chiropractor for back injury?
Comments (17)The most important thing she can do right now is to RELAX when the pain gets bad as tensing up causes a reaction that leads to more pain. I suffered for 15 years with back pain and every treatment available from 3 surgery's and acupressure, acupuncture, chiropractor and pain clinic, to wacky ideas. All helped a bit but not long term. I was on this forum when someone mentioned back pain and a book was suggested. I ordered the book ten minutes later and five days later I was 70% more pain free. I continue to do what it takes and I understand why the pain lasted so long. It's because tensing up sends a message to the brain that something is happening to the body and it reacts. This morning I woke up with sciatica, went right in to action, relaxing my body (yoga) and telling myself I have no pain. It was gone in half an hour. Here's a link to the book. All his theories are now scientifically proven. back book...See Moreaok27502
