Grass Identification

So I have just moved into a new house full of EVERY type of grass. fescue, blue, rye, you name it. None seem to be of an elite variety, and looks like more of years of different contractor mixes that have gone unweeded, unfertilized, etc. I also every type of weed... and LOTS of poa.

Anyway, yard is ok , and will be a project in the fall. However, this is my question:

Near the driveway I have this extremely dark green, low growing, very very thick patches of what looks like some type of dwarf bluegrass. I have mowed the lawn maybe 10 times in recent weeks, and these patches have yet to grow tall enough to even get trimmed by the mower! Awesome! ....and this is with fertilizer. I love this stuff. its beautiful, dark green, dense, and apparently low/slow growing. However, I don't know what specific variety it could possibly be. All I know, is I want a lot more of it, and want to know where to buy it!!!!!! Again, looks like a midnight type kbg if I had to guess, but nothing like I've seen in yards around here, or even the local golf courses. I'm amazed at the thickness, darkness, and slow slow growing habit it seems to have. - I'm located on the

Eastern Connecticut Shoreline.

KBG will do that if it is a little shady. It can be dark green yet not grow all that fast, particularly if it is only a year or two old.

You'd have to get much, much closer and lower to the ground on a cloudy day to get any photos that would allow identification. We need to see individual blades that haven't been cut. Even then it seems hard for people to make an ID online.

OK I'll try and get better pictures.... I'm just amazed at how fine bladed, thick and low growing these patches are. The rest of the yard looks fairly good, except for lots of weeds, but if my entire lawn looked like this and grew this low, slow, and thick, it would be like the fringe on a golf course. crazy.... stay tuned. I'll get a better picture soon.

Yes, there is time. But killing bermuda is not as easy as most of us think. I broadcast spray my bermuda lawn with glyphosate (75%) recommended dose mixed with other stuff and it kills everything, except the bermuda. Scroll to the bottom to see what a bermuda lawn sprayed with glypho looks like. So keep that in mind when dealing with bermuda. It can be controlled but you will have to stay on it from now on. Raking dormant bermuda will do nothing unfortunately. It will grow in the Spring/Summer when the temps get high enough. I would suggest TRYING to kill it all now while it's growing. I would plan on 6-8 weeks of fertilizing, spraying glypho, watering, repeat. I would do this cycle every 1-2 weeks with the max dose of glypho x 3 - 4. Bermuda should not be growing that well there because of the cold winters. That alone would scare the crap out of me. The traditional advice of mowing high, 4" if you can, to shade out the bermuda may work. But it looks like you have too much to shade out effectively. Pre-emergent won't hurt the bermuda, it will help it. We bermuda folks use preM to help keep weeds at bay, it in no way stops our bermuda growth.

Agree. Don't waste your time pulling them up. They have very fragile root system with a bulbous, nut-like, growth down a few inches. The roots easily break off from the nut leaving the nut in the ground from which you'll get 10 more spawn. Just spot spray the ones you have and keep after it. These are sedge plants, so be sure you get the right spray. Grass or weed killers will not work. It has to be a sedge killer. How have you been watering? Nutgrass usually grows best in soggy soil. I have gotten rid of it simply by changing to deep and infrequent watering. If you are already watering deeply and infrequently then you might have green kyllinga. Green kyllinga is another sedge that looks like nutgrass but has a different seed head. It is much less aggressive than nutgrass and lives just fine in very dry soil. It is also a sedge and must be killed with a sedge killer.

You 2nd picture of the dark green grass is not bermuda. It looks like the pale green, thin stuff is you bermuda lawn. Have you ever measured your actual water output? Do know roughly how many inches of water you are applying per week? The screwdriver test is a good start to sound watering practices. Adding in more info to help you know how water you are applying will help there. If your lawn is mostly bermuda and as pale green in color as it looks, you make simple need to feed it more. Bermuda does well with 1 lb of Nitrogen every 4-6 weeks. Many of use mixtures of organic and/or synthetic to achieve this goal. If you can provide your lawn with 1" of water per week and the feedings in will pop back in shape and fill in a lot of areas quickly. What type of bermuda do you have? When was it sodded/seeded? What is the total size of your lawn?

I live in the same area as the OP, and that looks very much like yellow nutsedge, Cyperus esculentus. A real pest, and not easy to get rid of. I've had some success with pulling/digging, making sure to get the roots and nutlets if the latter have already formed. There are also herbicides formulated specifically for nutsedge.
