Need growing advice for my somalense, please help!

I bought this somalense Tanzania from OOA in 2013. After it arrived I repotted it (they always ship in pots) and discovered this...

Rot, not good. OOA was great, refunded a large portion of the cost and told me what to do. I cut off the rot, hung it in the shed to dry for quite some time (don't remember exactly, at least a couple of weeks) and repotted it.

Since then, it's been surviving, but not thriving. I took it out of its pot this spring to check on the roots. Roots looked fine, no sign of any rot, so I repotted it. Here it is today...

Please ignore the scuzzy birdbath full of rotting yellowwood flowers (yes I have lots to do outside, never ending). And, no it's not sitting in the water, but on a rock. That was just the spot with the best light for a photo this morning.

This is what it does, it leafs out but doesn't really grow. I think I may be keeping it too dry, since I'm so afraid the rot will come back. I also wonder if my potting mix is too coarse.

Please, I'd appreciate any tips from those of you that grow somalense!
