1966 MCM Florida home - Please help me pick an exterior color scheme
We bought this home last week. While I love the MCM style, I find the color scheme uninspiring. The buckskin tan looks 'peachy'. I'm looking for a scheme that evokes richness but allows for some tropical flair too as I will be planting pretty extensive tropical gardens. I will try and get some better angled pics soon as I am open to getting new lighting and a front door too. Thanks in advance

Comments (28)Thanks so much for all your comments -- and for not going "yech" when you saw my tone-on-tone shutters. I can always paint them again later, but sure don't feel like doing it now. Enailes, the pathway, which will widen to 10 by 10 at one spot to accommodate facing benches -- will be a stamped concrete in a coquina (light creamy tan color) banded in a taupey brick shade a bit darker than the shutters. The benches (Ellsworth on benches.com) have been painted to match the shutters. I like them. Amysrq, the plants you mention sound interesting and I will pass them along to our wonderful landscape architect. Thanks. Caroleah -- no offense taken on the roof suggestion. Yes, we're planning on cleaning it -- just trying to find something that will not damage the roof like pressure washing can. Next week the digging up of the old walkway and some plants will begin. That's why we have to figure out the door color. So I hear it for a dark berry or black -- any green/teal fans out there or anything else? Comments (39)It is funny, but I did not change the garage door color. I used MS Paint and it did weird things to the roof too. Looking at it here, it seems like I made the top part brown.... I'd either do the garage door with the 2 light tones or keep it all white. I'd paint it last to see how it looks white first with the new house color. When I was working on the mock up, the lavender was either too strong or too light. I went with too light because the next step up was garish. Our lavender is sometimes very subtle, but when you see the nearby white, you realize it is not white too. It also looks different as the light changes throughout the day. I'll try to take an exterior pic of our house tomorrow. The landscaping needs a major trim, but the blooming trees out front are at their best. I work from my office Thurs-Sun and from home Mon-Wed (much fewer hours), so can do some work on them in the a.m. and take a neater photo ;) Although, it sounds like it is raining outside at the moment......See MorePlease help me? :) Exterior paint color scheme.....running out of time
Comments (9)It is interesting to me. I thought I liked it as is, but the pictures you posted are fabulous lukki. I love the green. I would probably lean towards cream though too. I just find it jarring to have the front so different than the rest of the house. I actually do not like it at all, yet have somehow ended up in that kind of house twice in a row! the one i Have now has brick on the entire front and then White vinyl siding on the other three sides. I've been looking at different houses and colors online and in stores all day and I seem to keep coming back to this inspo picture posted this morning by JudyG Designs. It has the same window grilles on the tops of the windows that our property has and a low profile, black shingle roof. I love the bright white color (Chantilly Lace maybe?) and the Yellow Hibiscus door! My husband is currently at the house wrapping the columns with 5 1/2" boards. If I try to go this route I would just paint the whole house Chantilly Lace, the door Yellow Hibiscus, and skip adding black trim. Might stick with painting the walkway and front porch SW Online (grey). Do you guys think it could work?! Thank you so much again for the outpouring of help!! 6 years agoHere are a couple more pics. I had extensive tree work done in prep for fresh paint and landscaping. I broke down and hired a color consultant so we'll see soon what they come up with. I wish I could change the roof color and white windows but both were replaced in 2015 by the previous owner.

Will you be growing tall trees so the home is eventually sheltered in dappled shade? Lower landscaping so the house rises above washed with sunshine? Do you want a rather mysterious look with a narrow area of accented house intriguing and drawing the eye in , making people going by try to see more? Do you want an open look with the property lushly foliaged but the house very much on display, serenely or exuberantly?
If you have a image in mind of what you want, style, mood and light included, you could then drive around both creative older and expensively landscaped neighborhoods looking for ideas to realize it. Color choices made then?
These mostly lack the rich color you want, but I was mostly thinking first of how it might be dressed with garden. :)
Lush elsewhere, perhaps, but close in as open and airy as the interior?
I'm really not crazy about brown in general, but even I think a brown reminiscent of wet tree trunks works wonderfully to accent and tie inside, transition areas, garden together. The previous property uses it also.

6 years agoI am a true tropicals gardener with 2 previous gardens under my belt (both sold my properties) so..what a timely post. This is my retirement home (I am only 45 now) but I waffle between low maintenance but long to live in tropical splender ala Balinese. I have live oaks on front property to be highlighted and 2 grand live oaks toward the back. more pics to follow but great questions to ponder!! thank you!!

Just an update. We finally started painting the exterior. The front stairs will be over-layed with concrete. The roof will be changed to white metal. So far I am really liking it.
