The Waiting Game.....Pictures to pass the time!
Comments (14)Hi Celeste, hopefully your waiting game is over soon and your roses are starting to leave out. On the other hand for us Gardenwebbers it's not a bad thing, that you are posting pictures of your beautiful roses to pass the time until then ;-). I bet when you really can go out and work in your garden with so many projects and roses to care for you are busy like a bee! All of the roses you have posted are very lovely, but of course I have some favorites: I love white roses and Baltimore Belle seems to be so beautiful. It must be very nice to sit underneath her! Gros Choux d'Hollande has a perfect flowers shape and I love the button eye. Baron Girod de L'ain is incredible pretty with his beautiful color with the white edge, nice flower shape and strong fragrance. I think that this is a very special rose and unusual rose. I am eying BGdL for quite a while and may have to figure out if I am able to grow him here. I kept Rose de Rescht for the last, because she is the most admired rose by me of the once that you have posted this time. You have a very beautiful bush and your photo captured the essence of this rose very well (both the bush shot and the single flower). I find that her fragrance is to die for. The best thing for me is: I HAVE this rose already. I got her as a very teeny tiny band this winter and just yesterday she opened her first flower for me. I am looking so much forward for her to mature and just cross my fingers that she likes my garden and wants to develop her full potential, here. I am also very anxious to see how large this rose gets in SoCa! Thanks for posting! I am looking forward to more photos of your incredible garden!...See MoreMystery rose from RVR
Comments (12)I live in Sweden and by a complicated ordering process had three small roses a few months ago from RVR supposed to be Marianne and one Radiance. One of the Mariannes flowered early and looks very similar to the Mystery Rose. If it is a Barden rose like Marianne the most likely suspect is Gallicandy. If not, I have no idea of its identity as the bush is still too small to have many characteristics. Another of the roses bloomed in very pale whitish yellow, not the least like Marianne. But I haven't given up hope about that one, sometimes the first bloom is not true. But if 2 out of 3 roses from RVR should prove wrong, I have been singularly unlucky! I was so excited to get a few namesake roses and have already dug the holes for them in my yellow bed. Now I have to get other yellows but I had counted on the gallica form. I suppose I shall have to look at Austins instead although I have a troubled relationship with them. Marianne in Sweden...See MoreWill Portlands and HP survive in my climate?
Comments (29)I'm not in your zone, so I don't know how large these roses would grow in your area, or if they would bloom in your summer heat. In my no-spray garden the Hybrid Perpetuals get blackspot and drop their leaves. This does not diminish their hardiness. They are slow to mature, but they produce beautiful blooms and make garden worthy roses. Mrs. John Laing is the best repeater amongst my HPs. They don't repeat as well in summer as the Bourbons, (Bourbons are almost continuous here...), so the Hybrid Perpetuls rest a bit in summer. The HPs have lovely fall blooms, but not as full and sumptuous as in spring. The HPs enjoy organic fertilizer and all day sun here, don't know in a warmer zone what their sun requirements would be. The Damask roses form lovely shrubs here and have reliable repeat bloom on the Perpetual varieties. They too get blackspot, however they thrive on organic fertilizers. As with the HPs, I'm not familiar with how these grow in a warm zone....See MoreLooking for very dark red fragrant rose?
Comments (43)Oklahoma is one of my favorites: Firefighter is NOT dark red. It's medium fire truck red, on the orange/pink side of red. The variety selection in Oz is different from the USA, but a great old HT rose available in your country is Charles Mallerin -- ugly plant though. I have 3X gallon sized plants from Roses Unlimited growing out in #5 pots at the moment. They have bloomed, but probably still too immature to give that saturated black velvet effect. I'm no Francophone, so it took me many many years to realize the name is actually pronounced "Shawl Mahlran." Oklahoma & Papa Meilland are it's seedlings, you should skip the bush version of PM. I'm very jealous of the Climbing Papa Meilland in OZ, because it's not sold in the USA. I recommend you try Black Baccara. It's a satisfying garden plant with very long lasting florist type roses. The fragrance is light at best, but it's a sacrifice for petal longevity. Each 5" perfectly shaped flower lasts over two weeks on the bush for me. Dakota Redwing is brick red or burnt orange during summer and most of the year. I have yet to see a purple bloom, but now would be perfect conditions with cold nights and clear daytimes. The first year has been underwhelming.... I grow the miniature Black Jade near my doorstep because I like to affix it to my jacket's lapel when I go into town. It's a beautiful blood red colour. I'm ordering Black Magic this upcoming Spring, so can't yet comment on its performance. You can find pictures to all of these on HMF....See MoreMelissa Northern Italy zone 8
