Looks like the centifolia Gros Choux d'Hollande.

Hi greybird, I did a search and they do look alike! Also, I was on the RVR website browsing through their roses and my rose looks very similar to another centifolia- Paul Ricault.

Take a look at "Duchesse de Rohan" as well. I have that one from them, and it fits your description also. You may have to try to id it from the green parts: sepals, stipules, foliage, etc. A lot of those OGR's look a lot alike--pink and petal packed.

I thought immediately of Louise Odier, especially when I read that it was a tall, lanky rose. The pictures on HMF of LO look quite similar to your rose.

My best guess is 'Baronne Prevost'. I always feel that Old Garden Roses are particularly difficult to identify. Please, let us know if you think you have found a match. Good luck!

I live in Sweden and by a complicated ordering process had three small roses a few months ago from RVR supposed to be Marianne and one Radiance. One of the Mariannes flowered early and looks very similar to the Mystery Rose. If it is a Barden rose like Marianne the most likely suspect is Gallicandy. If not, I have no idea of its identity as the bush is still too small to have many characteristics. Another of the roses bloomed in very pale whitish yellow, not the least like Marianne. But I haven't given up hope about that one, sometimes the first bloom is not true. But if 2 out of 3 roses from RVR should prove wrong, I have been singularly unlucky! I was so excited to get a few namesake roses and have already dug the holes for them in my yellow bed. Now I have to get other yellows but I had counted on the gallica form. I suppose I shall have to look at Austins instead although I have a troubled relationship with them.

Marianne in Sweden

My first guess is a Bourbon not Louise Odier which is more cupped & rounded this is quartered so RVR sells Madame Ernest Calvat that fits the bill & form the link I listed is what I'm familiar with for this rose. Many of the other shots are over sarurated with color.

You might not be unlucky--some of the early flowers on my Marianne were very pale whitish yellow:

The leaves look the same in the photo as they do now, however--somewhat glossy and more modern looking than many gallicas, to my eye.

There's a discussion about Marianne posted a few days ago. You might want to check it out to see what people have to say about size before you choose a final location. If it's the correct rose, it gets HUGE!

Wow, those old roses sure do look alike :D My rose does look like Duchesse de Rohan as well as Baronne Prevost. LOL! I don't think it is Louise Odier because I grow her next to my arbor and her blooms and foliage are very different. That Paul Ricault looks good enough to eat but I guess no way my rose could be him as mine is much lighter.

If my rose ends up being id'ed as Mme Ernest Calvat, I am going to think I am the luckiest girl around!!! I was craving Calvat and Mme Pierre Oger this year and the only reason I didn't get them is because I overshot my rose budget :D

Sounds like the rose identification process stays exciting! I don't think that the rose is Mme. Ernest Calvat, because her pink blooms are a more pale grayish pink than on your photo, at least mine looks like that. Also MEC produces very characteristic dark burgundy colored leaves when they are young, I assume you would have noticed that and mentioned it in your description of the rose. MEC also should have some blackspot ;-), which I don't see at all!
I am curious to read what RVR have to say!

I vote for Comte de Chambord. Definitely not Paul Ricault, differnet flower shape.

Thank you for the comfort, lucretia! I did have hopes that the colour would turn out right with later flowers. I checked the old Marianne thread but I have a hard time visualizing an 8 ft tall Marianne in my climate although it gets so big in American 5 and 6 zones. I may have to reconsider where to put it though. If it will get so big it may need some kind of structure.
