What do you do when you hate your daughter's haircut?
Comments (29)I remember when the afro was popular and I asked my Mom if I could have one and she said no. I was in the 7th grade and thought how mean. Well when I was a freshman(14) in high school, I asked again and she told me that I could do it IF I was responsible about it and kept it neat and always looked presentable. I remember it as one of my first big decisions and I was so proud of the fact that she had enough faith in me that I would do the right thing and I did. Fast forward a gazillion years later and my D son asked if he could grow his hair out so that he could wear it braided. At the time he was 14 and I remembered the encounters with my Mom and I said the same thing to him. My hubby immediately said no and we had a family meeting and we made it clear that if he didn't take care of his hair AND save up the money to pay for getting it braided himself, then it would be cut off. Well my son is now almost 22 with hair below his shoulders and he is very responsible about taking care of his hair. Actually he is almost obsessed about it :-) That was one of the first real mature decisions for him, just like it was for me. I think depending on the maturity level of the kid, 14 is not too young to start experimenting with hair. As long as it is made clear to the kid what the potential ramifications are, then I think it is fine. I think we as adults have to remember what it is like to be that age and struggle with individuality vs what's popular and how hard it can be for teenagers. It is just hair and it will grow back. I have had every imaginable hairstyle under the sun, afro, long, short, asymmetrical, mullet and braids. Each style represented me during a particular period and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do different things. We have to support, be honest but let them discover who they are. Oh yeah one other thing, as soon as my son started growing facial hair, he loved it and I hated it. He would let it grow long and I would beg for him to please shave and my hubby gently reminded ME about letting him express his individuality :-) To me he looked like Grizzly Adams but to my son it made him look older. Ughh.... So the running joke between us was that I would call him Grizzly but if he wanted to look like a mountaim man, that was his choice. Again fast forward a few years and he has a very nice goatee that is now well manicured and he looks great. I remembered my own experience and let him be and he eventually grew out of the Grizzly Adams look. Thank goodness!...See MoreWhat trend do you hate right now?
Comments (56)Kathsgrdn - I was going to say the same about the blue tooth thing. You really need to be on the phone so much that it has to be glued to your ear? And you look ridiculous walking around talking to yourself. It drives me crazy. The trend I really hate is how people use cell phones, as mentioned in many posts above. Yes, I've used my in public, but I try to make it short. I see people walking around a store in deep conversation. Hey, I don't want to hear your conversation. Take it outside! Once when I was in Starbucks, a women couldn't even pry the phone off her ear long enough to place her order. She instead grabbed one of the business cards on the counter, wrote down her order, and threw it at the barista. She talked the entire time, took her drink and left. The barista and cashier were floored. They couldn't believe the nerve. Don't even get me started on people using cell phones when driving. Zeetera - really, you don't like scarves other than in winter? There are some cute linen ones for the spring....See MoreWhat weeds do you hate most?
Comments (37)Portulaca/purslane will definitely cover the ground but I wouldn't want to use it as a living mulch. Last year was my vegetable garden's first year and I had a small area of portulaca in it. I pulled most of it but left a small amount at the garden's edge...it makes a pretty flower and the leaves aren't objectionable, either. Well, this year it has sprouted and grown all over the 1500sf garden!!! It is an annual but re-seeds readily and and will easily root from cuttings/chopped up pieces. I did a wholesale weeding the other day (we've gotten a good bit of rain that has encouraged weeds and hindered getting in the garden)...spent about nine hours in the garden...very long day. Out of the weeds in the garden, 50% of them was portulaca. I had hoed the garden a month ago but this appeared to have only cultivated it and encouraged it to grow. It will smother most anything beneath it, the leaves are thick/fleshy and create a dense, low-laying canopy. The roots are hard to pull in dry ground without breaking the fleshy stems but fairly easy to pull up in moist ground. I was very surprised to see how it had spread all over the garden. I would not recommend it for any use, though some may find it useful in desert, dry, rocky gardens of flowers and plants, or maybe in an edible/permaculture landscape. It's a pretty plant but in my location, and in a vegetable garden, it seems to be a highly invasive plant....See MoreWhat past job or experience do you feel shaped you?
Comments (20)I started working in professional services in the medical software field in the mid-80s BPC - before PCs. I worked for one company that went out of business shortly after I started and another owned/managed by a nut case. Then I went to work for a startup founded and led by a most amazing leader and business person. I didn't have much experience at that time and was given a fabulous opportunity to travel and work with hospitals throughout the US and one in Singapore. I developed great adaptability and confidence working with buggy software - never knew what I would encounter at the next customer site. I love software and medicine and was truly blessed to fall into something that was such a perfect fit for me. Being in a small, entrepreneurial company also offered me the chance to become a manager, and the leader of our company was a wonderful teacher and role model for me, being new to that role. I went on to advance to a senior executive level position in the same field before I retired and I think, and have been told by quite a few people who worked with me, that I was a great leader and the best manager they ever had. I know I changed some people's lives by seeing what they were capable of and believing they could do bigger and better things than they, themselves believed. Maybe I inherently had some of what it took to do that but I give great credit to the leadership and experience I had at that company starting back in 1989. In any case I feel so fortunate to have had such an enjoyable and fulfilling career that pretty much started with that company....See More- 8 years ago
