are you sure it needs water every day??? please dont drown it. insert your finger as far as it will go .. and let it nearly dry between waterings ... it needs air in its roots as much as it needs water near its roots... extremes of either are detrimental ... otherwise.. its going through shock ... and you really don't know how well it was taken care of by the retailer .. and its fall ... all the leaves will be falling off soon enough ... the stress may have caused an early dormancy ... just locate and save the receipt for next spring ... good luck ken

It sounds like a bit of transplant shock is at issue. Agree with the above posting on the need to build up a the soil slightly around the trunk of the tree (beam) so that water will be directed at the tree and not just run off. You should basically do this with any plant you transplant into the ground. Also agree with the need to mulch as this will maintain soil moisture and temperature year round. I think watering once a day is sufficient at this point. Temps are moderately warm here and I suspect we are entering a prolonged dry period now--so don't neglect autumn watering. Remember that this IS a deciduous tree/shrub and the transplanting may be the stressor tht triggered some of the falling to occur prematurely. I transplanted my Zuni crapes about a month ago. Not only did they root in--they are now covered in flowers. I would say forget about the bloom for this year at this point and hopefully the plant will be rooting into the ground from now through autumn. Good luck!

Crepe myrtles are just leafing out here, north central Texas DFW area, zone 8a. They're famous for being the last things to emerge from winter dormancy, & if you had a harsh winter, they may be even later. Don't give up on your lovely crepe myrtle!

With any deciduous tree like crapes, you will have no privacy in winter. I'd consider planting at least a few 'Chindo' viburnums for a fast upright evergreen to provide that year-round privacy. Glossy leaves are gorgeous, deer-resistant. Best to plant about 5 feet or more from fence. You might also include some spineless upright hollies like Ilex integra if you can find it. Also perhaps a Teddy Bear magnolia. Your neighbor has the right to trim anything that grows over the fence line, which may also reduce your privacy, depending on how closely you plant it to the fence.
