What's your favorite scent in mauve roses?
Comments (17)People dislike Sterling Silver because it is usually a very weak and sickly plant that puts out few flowers. The flowers are gorgeous but you don't get many for all the work the plant requires. It was a breakthrough in rose colors when it came out so it's a pretty famous name, even indifferent gardeners know that name so people ask for it specifically and then it dies on them and then they think 'roses are too hard to grow'. Stainless Steel is an improved version, a bit healthier and more floriferous with the same color and scent. When I was the rose buyer at the local retail nursery there were a few roses that every customer knew the name of and would ask for and that I could have sold any number of: Peace, Mr. Lincoln, Tropicana, and Sterling Silver. I would carry the first two because they perform ok here but I refused to carry the last two because they don't grow well here and they turn people off of roses. Blue Girl too to a lesser extent, but same result for the gardener - won't grow. It's all marketing hype, just like everyone asks for Red Delicious apples and Concord grapes. neither of which grow well here, and there have been so many better varieties introduced since they came out. Big Purple for me was more of a dark pink. Excellent fragrance, but not purple. Fragrant Plum and Melody Parfumee are both real mauve color and very fragrant but it's been a long time since I've grown them. Barbra Streisand was a weak grower for me but performed beautifully when I gave it to a friend with better soil....See MoreWhich Austin English roses do I NEED to add next season?
Comments (84)Thanks Kate--I guess I've been very much on the fence about whether they'll tolerate the cold here, will just have to see I think. The flowers look so gorgeous I think I have to try anyway, so I was going to put in 4-5 and see. I'm essentially zone 6 in the backyard, so maybe I'll have success with them if you have. Do you winter protect? My neighbor did lose some HTs from year to year but he planted the bud union above ground and didn't winter protect. My Austins always seem significantly hardier and I was hoping these, although marketed as HTs, were more mixed lineage and would be hardier too. The beds are a bit elevated, which hurts cold-tolerance but helps keep things well-drained. But I can bury the bud unions and throw on some bark mulch or leaves in the fall, which may help. Okay, Peter is officially on the list, and I think I MUST have Liv and Yves Piaget--the flowers look too wonderful to pass up. Every weekend the ground stays workable I keep fixing up the beds to accommodate more roses...so now I have room for another order from Roses Unlimited!...See Moreupdate: obf white elephant # 2
Comments (102)I received my box from Deb today. This is what was inside. Thank you very much, Deb. Now I need to get some potted. The flowers the neighbor weed whacked in the highway curb are trying to come back. It looks odd where the blooming Gypsophia ends, though, like the row abruptly stops. Comments (74)For me it is simple, while I appreciate many granites and some ss appliances, they are not for everyone. I also find many granites to be downright ugly and many ss appliances to be boring looking (hard to distinguish from all the others I have seen that day). I think the best plan is to figure out what you like by having an open mind. Shopping out your options and getting what works for your home, family and budget. What I have heard repeatedly on this thread that just because the masses think that granite and ss are "musts" that one should follow their own instincts and not worry that you are not part of the trend. We got 3 ss elements in our kitchen (hood, wall oven and micro shelf), 4 in white (fridge, freezer, micro and range) and a black dw. No one can accuse us of following the herd. Each one was chosen on its merits. If we had found a perfect granite, we might have gotten that, but over time, I think we came to the conclusion that it would not work with the vintage homey vibe we were shooting for. It was not for lack of trying though. We met with fabricators and walked miles in granite yards trying to pick one if it hit us right AND worked in our space. We saw many that were lovely but were not the right color scheme or look for this particular kitchen. I think if people don't consider their options, then they will have a limited kitchen (and life). We ended up with Corian counters which I would have bet heavily against going into the project. An open mind and patience led us to our right choices. Others will find their own answers, but hopefully not look down on kitchens that don't have ss or granite. Luckily, we have GW where we can read about others' experiences, see their choices and learn about more options. I'd know so much less if I had not practically lived here for a few years, lol!...See MoreRosylady (PNW zone 8)
