Let's start with the basics. Where are you located? Need city and state, USDA zone is not helpful.

Post some pictures of your overall lawn area, as well as closeups of the grass from 3 about inches away. Don't take the pictures in full glaring sun, the contrast makes it hard to be able to see anything.

You mentioned dog burns. Do you have dogs or did the previous owner? If so, what kind of dog? Will the grass be subject to a lot of regular traffic(kids playing, entertaining etc)?

The fast fix for dog spots is to drop a handful of table sugar on it. The problem is caused by the soil microbes not being able to process the urine fast enough. The sugar stimulates the microbes to repopulate. Once there are enough microbes, the spot will heal itself without you doing anything else. No need to dig or compost or reseed.

Here is a summary of a low hassle approach to lawn care. These are in order of importance.

Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the daytime air temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall.

Mowing: Mulch mow at your mower's highest setting for most grasses. The exceptions are bermuda, centipede, and creeping bentgrass. Those should be mulch mowed at the lowest setting.

Fertilizer: For chemical fertilizers do the first application of the year on Memorial Day, second one on Labor Day. Last application goes down about Thanksgiving. It actually goes down after the grass stops growing in the fall but before you get a frost to make it dormant. This timing depends on where you live. If you want to use organic fertilizer, you can do that any day of the year. If you want to save some money, instead of buying commercially bagged organic fertilizer, go to your local feed store and get a bag of soybean meal, alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow), corn meal, or whatever ground up nut, bean, or seed you can find in a 50-pound bag. The cost per application will be about 1/6 what the commercially bagged fertilizers cost. The application rate is 15-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Herbicide: Stay away from weed n feed products. When you want to fertilize, use a fertilizer. When you want to kill weeds, use a spray product so you can spot spray individual weeds. Which herbicide you use depends on what type of grass you have and what kind of weed you have.

Insecticide: I've never needed an insecticide, but I realize some people do. It's just rare. For that reason don't use insecticide every June just in case. Insecticides are really bad for the biology in your soil. If you think you have a bug problem, search here or write in and ask what to use.

I live in Fargo, ND

I currently have an Alaskan Malamute, I have been trying some grass saver supplements daily in her last meal of the day. It's been very dry here this spring so I dont know if its simply too dry for the grass to withstand ANY urine or if the grass savers arent working. I had her in the front yard, which was demolished over the winter from standing water that refroze this spring and her dog burns. I just seeded that two days ago.

I'll get some pictures up asap, its currently raining pretty hard (2 days after reseeding the dog spots and i have standing water over the spots i seeded) =(
