What happens when the rose you ordered isn't what you ordered?
Comments (10)Believe it or not I got Ducher instead of Duchess of Brabant last week. That is really funny. Same exact problem but, I got mine from Chamblee's. Luckily, I noticed it 2 days later when I was planting it. I called them right up and they apologized and sent me my Duchess on Monday. It should be here by Thursday. The best part was they told me to keep Dutcher. Of course, being that they were sending another order, I had to add to it. It must be a label thing as when I first opened the Box and looked at all the Labels I didn't notice it either. I think we both got lucky as I've done some homework on Dutcher and think we'll grow to like him. Dan...See MoreDidn't kill my rose yet-what is it &what should I do with it?
Comments (7)Thanks for the ideas. I could go crazy with orange roses apparently! I think I'll have to rule out Amber Queen which does look right but I think this plant has been in the ground longer than the 80s. The previous owner thought it had been in since the greenhouse was installed in the late 50s or early 60s. The classy fence post is newer. :) What makes a climber a climber instead of something that was pruned funny? Aside from the obvious trunks, this one doesn't put out any long branches. But it's had so much "shaping" I can't tell....See MoreI'm in AZ. Where should I order roses? (rootstock etc)
Comments (7)Local nurseries try their hardest to stock what the rosarians want. Jude the Obscure was offered by Bakers Nursery, 40th Street & Osborn, last year. They usually stock some 7000 roses each December. Berridge Nurseries, 46th Street and Camelback, also stocks several thousand roses in December with sporadic shipments through the year. Harpers on Scottsdale Road (south of Thomas), Summer Winds on Tatum & Bell and A&P Nurseries in Mesa all stock roses most of the year. The West Valley has a Summer Winds on Bell Road and Star Nursery on Thunderbird. I understand that Sunset Nursery on 59th Avenue is still open although I haven't been in there for years. Up until a few years ago, nearly 70% of all roses sold were grown out west of Phoenix. Jackson & Perkins had fields out there before they moved them to CA. There are still hundreds of acres of roses near Litchfield Park but development is encroaching at an ever rapid rate. The nurseries place their orders in September and should know if they'll be getting certain roses. Star, Weeks and J&P are the usual vendors so there isn't a lot to choose from in Austin, mini or OGR offerings. I get most of my Austins from Bakers or batch an order with other rose society members or attend a rose society auction. The first rose show of the season is Nov 4 in Green Valley, south of Tucson. Nov 17 is the Mesa/East Valley Rose Show at Mesa Community College and the West Valley show is Nov 24 at the new Glendale Civic Center, 57th Ave & Glenn, during the Glendale Glitters opening weekend. All of them open to the public at 1pm....See MoreWhat should I order from John's Miniature Roses?
Comments (14)Decobug - I ended up getting Michel Cholet, Nickelodeon, and Chick-a-Dee. They've all been slow growing so it's too early to form an opinion. I'm pretty sure I'm going to love Nickelodeon. Chick-a-Dee is a cute little pink and white striped mini. I'll have to see how well it holds it's stripes in our hot summers. I've barely gotten any blooms off of Michel so I'll have to wait until next summer to see what I think of it. Laurie...See Morejacqueline9CA
