Despite lifestyle changes, cholesterol rising
Comments (10)I am very active in the diabetes community and subscribe to the newsletter of the American Association of Practicing Endocronologists and the Joslin clinic for diabetes research, as well as seeing a specialist myself. Have you even heard of metabolic syndrome? My blood sugar is tightly controlled, but it has not in any way helped my lipid panel. Cholesterol is NOT a side effect it is a co-effect according to nearly all researchers in the field. My DNA has the APO-e marker for high LDL and triglycerides My cholesterol actually has a peculiar shape in that it has a corkscrew end that bores into the walls of my arteries. It doesn't really matter if we agree or not. The treatment is the same. My only concern is that someone who is doing everything right can be made to feel wrong because they didn't get the result you did. I also think that there is a great deal yet to be discovered about diet, exercise physiology, and the root cause of metabolic syndrome. This is not a one size fits all disease. My last HBA1C was 5.8 and my cholesterol was worse than ever. I live near a medical school that puts a lot of emphasis on diabetes research. One of the surprising things that has come up recently is that it looks like it is better to spike and return to normal than to take a lower hit of sugar over a longer period of time (e.g. taking it with fat or fiber). This is totally contrary to what anyone expected or current medical advice. They aren't releasing this information yet because they want to run the tests again to be sure. I think this is an interesting example of how best medical practice can be turned on its head. If the OP finds that her blood sugar is elevated, I hope that she has the same result that you do when she lowers it, but I am a little bit sceptical because her exercise regime has so far failed to help....See MoreAre we still working out/seeking healthy lifestyle.
Comments (11)I joined a new (to me) workout facility that has small groups with a trainer, 20 minutes of weights followed by about 1/2 hr of cardio, 3 times a week. Food plan and weigh-ins every week. In the 5 weeks I've been going, I have lost..drumroll please...2 pounds. However, this was during the Epic Birthday celebrations and several weekends away, so if I hadn't been at least sorta following this new plan, I probably would have gained 5 lbs. And even though the scale says I've lost only 2 lbs., my jeans fit as though I've lost more. What works for me is that I have an appointment 3 times a week so I HAVE to show up. And then there's the weekly weigh in, so there's a lot of accountability. The only negative is that the trainers try to force a sort of social thing that I'm really not interested in. I have plenty of friends and not looking to make new ones at the gym. I'm friendly, but I'm there to get a job done! Health wise, I have some looming appointments that aren't all fun. Because my mom died of ovarian cancer, I have had annual pelvic ultrasounds since I was about 35 (I just turned 50). In all that time, they have been normal. A few weeks ago, I went for the usual u/s and there was "something" on my ovary. They want to check again in a few weeks to see if it was something cyclical and may just go away. If it's still there, I'll have an MRI. Since my mother died at 55, I have always had a "thing" about entering the 50-something decade, so having "something" found on an ovary 3 days after turning 50 has messed with my head a bit. But I'm trying not to worry about it. We are having a higher degree of stress than usual with oldest DS, who has provided a steady stream of stress during his 22 years, and I am trying to take care of myself in ways to help alleviate that stress so it doesn't bring me to an early grave! Massage, escapes with friends, exercise, etc....See MoreStanding at the Crossroads--Lifestyle Change
Comments (24)You've made a huge first step, just by talking about it here at the forum. So, first of all, congratulations! I'm 56 and just 4 months ago made the decision you've just made. I was in need of losing 80 pounds, in need of eating better, in need of more energy, in need of something to make me feel better about the future (DH has been out of work since August), and in need of the ability to work in my garden again. Yup, I needed it all. Sound familiar? In 4 months I've already made a big change and am OK with the fact that it will take a year or more to reach my goals. I have a plan and sometimes I do well and other times not quite so well. But I keep trying to make choices that get me closer to that goal all the time. For me, it was weight watchers but it can be anything. I had to accept that everything I did was driven by a choice. I could choose to eat something or choose not to eat it . It didn't just happen. Food didn't jump into my mouth unaided. If I choose to pick it up and eat it, then I could just as readily choose NOT to pick it up. HERE'S SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS FOR YOU: just a 10 or 15 pound weight loss will make you feel better! Try not to focus on the whole amount that you want to lose. Break it down into smaller more manageable amounts. You'll be amazed at how different your clothes feel at 15 pounds. Shirts that you've been wearing as jackets, will actually button! How cool is that? I've lost 27 pounds since Nov 10th and I'm wearing a different size of clothes. I feel great, sleep better, hurt less, etc, etc, etc. And I'm working in the garden without feeling like I'm going to keel over breathless! lol. It's all good. I don't miss any foods because on WW I can have anything I want, just smaller amounts of some things. You will have to learn a different way of eating, and fill up on foods that are better for you, but you don't have to give up good food. Good luck and please keep telling us how you are doing! Comments (40)Ah Jill.. you have been through a lot in these last few months. Give yourself some grace! You lost the stress and vacation pounds and you are totally back on track. Glad the videos not only make you feel accomplished but that they are elevating your spirits too! I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for the kind words for hitting my 50lb loss milestone! It has been kind of weird though and I want to share it here in case anyone else has experienced the same ... So first off, the milestone passed without me even realizing it. It was almost a whole week before i knew that last week's loss took me over the 50lb mark. I do track my weight a few times a week but the default view is the last 30 days. Anyhow, that may be part of the reason that I just don't feel excited or proud or well... anything actually. I am looking forward and eager to chip away at the next 50 -- I am confident and committed. It's not that I feel anything negative or self-sabotaging. I just don't feel especially proud or like this was an achievement. I want to be clear-- I am not upset or looking for support or more kudos LOL, You all have been great and encourage me in so many ways. It just seems odd that hitting the milestone itself just didn't spark any reaction from me. I guess that's fine as long as I stay motivated. Have any of you experienced the same?...See Moreyeonassky
