Comments (37)@legomom, the sit/stand thing is always an concern for me-- I have a genetic blood disease that greatly increases the chance of blood clots... and now that I am working at home, I sit much more than ever. I don't think a standing desk would work for me but I should consider one... in the short term I can definitely get up in move. I think my neighborhood is similar to yours-- not all roads have sidewalks but it is safe and "walkable" .. but you can't really walk anywhere. You can walk the neighborhood. I would be ok with that except that my vision issues make it unsafe for me. I can best walk with someone in front of me-- which is a possibility maybe if i can get a walking partner. I basically have no depth perception, double vision and poor focus. I can't focus on moving things or changing focal points. I am best in full light with high contrast. I am a mess, huh? lol. I really do love the idea of short stints of exercise-- i am going to start tomorrow! No-- now, I REALLY need to get up. My behind hurts! ETA I think I could walk on a track without issues.. but since I don't drive that is a little bit of an issue. I may uber to a track once a week.. or try to rope a niece into walking with me. One also has some weight to lose so that's an option if she's game....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 1/8
Comments (21)This past week I have refocused on my health goals and am getting back into my regular exercise and eating routine. I am still up a few pounds from the holidays and I'd like to work on that. I have been swimming, running, biking, and lifting weights. My sinuses are finally better so that's helping too. I am struggling a bit with energy levels when I'm exercising, though I'm not certain exactly why. On the eating front I'm trying to be more mindful about real hunger vs boredom/mouth hunger. I am continuing IF, cycled in a 36hr fast this week. One thing I notice is that my skin looks amazing after a fast. Some of my reasoning for doing fasting is the autophagy/healing component (beyond caloric intake reduction) so it's kind of nice to see something come of that (at least in my eyes even if no one else can see it). Also in the summer I kept myself quite busy with yard work and projects and I've been feeling a little bored so I'm tackling some indoor projects like tediously steam cleaning every single grout joint in the miles of tile in my house. It's not really exercise, but it's still activity and I think it's good for me to keep occupied and feeling like I'm accomplishing things outside of my career. On the sheet pan front, I do sheet pan veggies all the time and sometimes full sheet pan meals. For super simple, I chop up veggies (commonly brussel sprouts, cauliflower, red onion, broccoli, sometimes delicata squash or sweet potato, bell peppers, green beans) and toss with olive oil and salt and pepper and roast for around 20 minutes at 400-415. I frequently do sheet pan Tandoori tofu and vegetables from this website, but it looks like they have a whole page of 25 sheet pan meals. Thought others might enjoy some of these too. https://www.feastingathome.com/10-sheet-pan-dinners-to-make-life-simple/ I recently ordered some dried guajillo chiles online because I really want to make this pinto posole and I couldn't find them at my local grocery store. Lately I've really been feeling soups and brothy recipe for warmth in the chilly winter. I haven't made this yet, but I'm looking forward to making it in the near future. https://cookieandkate.com/pinto-posole-recipe/ @nicole___ I'm very jealous of a clear running trail. That sounds lovely! My husband doesn't like to run with me, but when we take walks together we share a single pair of earbuds too. I love it. @Funkyart you're so thoughtful in taking care of your nephew. What a wonderful aunt. @RNmomof2 zone 5 skiing is such great exercise! That's wonderful to have done a ski trip. I'm impressed that you've been able to shed the few holiday pounds already. Well done! @Sueb20 and @gsciencechick great job keeping up with the exercise! I think it' so great for our health to keep ourselves moving. Strength, flexibility, cardio vascular health. All of it! I'm really impressed with how well everyone is taking care of themselves individually. Love feeling motivated by this group. Thanks!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 5/21
Comments (25)Congratulations Funky! Your non scale victories are really adding up. Keep being proud of yourself and celebrate your accomplishments! @yeonassky - I've been trying to add weights to my workout since about the first of the year and I love feeling stronger. I haven't noticed a huge body composition change yet, but I am definitely getting stronger. I love the little goals along the way - I can do a mostly real pushup now:) and just a couple weeks ago I started dead hanging. I couldn't get my feet off the ground, and today I hung for a count of 10. It really has amazed me - I don't think I've felt this proud of myself in years:) I would LOVE to be able to do one pull-up. Even as a young girl trying to climb the rope in elementary school gym class, I never had any upper body strength So the thought of a pull-up really makes me happy. Something to work towards. My diet has been ok. I've been pretty lax with the not so great foods, so I should probably tighten that up some, but otherwise it's been pretty steady. For me, it comes down to a good night's sleep and a great breakfast with all the protein and fiber. If I mess up my morning, I have a hard time with the rest of the day. @pricklypearcactus - I hate that you have those food struggles. That really does complicate things that are already difficult. @gsciencechick - I love that you are feeling so optimistic about your upcoming birthday. There is something about being in a better place than last year that makes you feel good! All the young forever people like to say - your birthday is just your chronological age. You are in charge of your body's biological age....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/6 Enjoy your vacation, Funky!
Comments (16)The weather is finally cooling some here, at least at night. It's making morning exercise more pleasant. I've been doing great with running and swimming. Still not achieving my weight lifting goals. Just too busy with work during the day and then finding myself busy at night and unable to find a second exercise window. I'm continuing 5:2 intermittent fasting and doing ok. Not sure if I'm cutting down snacking as much as I should. Went on a few weekend trips and ate pretty well, so that seems like a positive. Managed very moderate alcohol intake even when surrounded by people imbibing quite a bit. On one of the weekend trips my husband and I spent hours walking (to a museum, in the museum, then around a nearby community garden) and ride-share biking (back from the museum instead of using Uber/Lyft). It was nice to be quite active while also enjoying site-seeing in a new city. I am currently on a running sports bra quest. My beloved Brooks Rebound Racer has been discontinued and I am devastated. I've ordered probably 5 sports bras and rejected most of them. I don't understand why Brooks got rid of this very popular really phenomenal sports bra. So many of the high intensity bras have moved to this weird foam layer, including Brooks. Sizing is really confusing too. I measure one size but that seems to be too big. I think my swimming has caused the measurement just below the armpits to be a little larger, while the actual band underneath needs to be smaller. It's all very frustrating and confusing....See MoreFunkyart
