Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/7
Comments (27)@yeonassky thank you for sharing. I appreciate how she approaches the importance of form. Because I was an athlete many years ago, I struggle when returning to exercise because I have unrealistic expectations of what I can do.. or what I think I should be able to do. I am not going to be able to start out running a few miles, swimming miles or dropping to do 20 perfect pushups. I CAN build up to them though-- and I love that the video emphasizes using the correct form even when doing a much modified version of the pushup. Thank you. @pricklypearcactus I am so sorry you are dealing with these issues! I totally get the challenges of eating out with dietary limitations. I feel uncomfortable even with family who go out of their way to serve foods I can eat-- I don't want them to prepare something special for me. I don't want to add to their planning/cooking tasks! On the other side though, it is so awkward to go to a restaurant or dinner party and not be able to eat anything. I could get by without gluten at home but it would definitely be a struggle outside of the home. And you are right, i need to just make a set time for exercise. Early morning is a possibility. I start my day very early but that time from 5/5:30 to 8am is pretty sacred to me. It's when I get the most work done and I really value the quiet time before the frequent interruptions, problems, questions start flowing in. In my 40s, I used to run at lunchtime. It was a great break in the day and a great way to work off the frustrations of the day. I think I'll try both carving out 40 min in the morning first and at lunch and see which feels better. @legomom23 I don't think it is all calories in/out for me either. I know my metabolism plays a factor also. I really did't overeat regularly and I didnt eat high calorie foods regularly-- I can't explain why I have struggled with my weight for so long (basically all my life). I would compare my eating with that of my siblings or my bff-- and I would eat so much less but weigh so much more. I have learned to accept this, it is what it is, but I try to build my weight loss strategies around that. As I've said before, IF works very well for me and I suspect it has to do with my metabolism. And of course, I need to add muscle-building exercise! That has such further reach than just the energy expended/calories burned. I definitely need to get moving with exercise NOW. (She says as she gets ready to go out for the morning vs exercising)...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 1/8
Comments (21)This past week I have refocused on my health goals and am getting back into my regular exercise and eating routine. I am still up a few pounds from the holidays and I'd like to work on that. I have been swimming, running, biking, and lifting weights. My sinuses are finally better so that's helping too. I am struggling a bit with energy levels when I'm exercising, though I'm not certain exactly why. On the eating front I'm trying to be more mindful about real hunger vs boredom/mouth hunger. I am continuing IF, cycled in a 36hr fast this week. One thing I notice is that my skin looks amazing after a fast. Some of my reasoning for doing fasting is the autophagy/healing component (beyond caloric intake reduction) so it's kind of nice to see something come of that (at least in my eyes even if no one else can see it). Also in the summer I kept myself quite busy with yard work and projects and I've been feeling a little bored so I'm tackling some indoor projects like tediously steam cleaning every single grout joint in the miles of tile in my house. It's not really exercise, but it's still activity and I think it's good for me to keep occupied and feeling like I'm accomplishing things outside of my career. On the sheet pan front, I do sheet pan veggies all the time and sometimes full sheet pan meals. For super simple, I chop up veggies (commonly brussel sprouts, cauliflower, red onion, broccoli, sometimes delicata squash or sweet potato, bell peppers, green beans) and toss with olive oil and salt and pepper and roast for around 20 minutes at 400-415. I frequently do sheet pan Tandoori tofu and vegetables from this website, but it looks like they have a whole page of 25 sheet pan meals. Thought others might enjoy some of these too. https://www.feastingathome.com/10-sheet-pan-dinners-to-make-life-simple/ I recently ordered some dried guajillo chiles online because I really want to make this pinto posole and I couldn't find them at my local grocery store. Lately I've really been feeling soups and brothy recipe for warmth in the chilly winter. I haven't made this yet, but I'm looking forward to making it in the near future. https://cookieandkate.com/pinto-posole-recipe/ @nicole___ I'm very jealous of a clear running trail. That sounds lovely! My husband doesn't like to run with me, but when we take walks together we share a single pair of earbuds too. I love it. @Funkyart you're so thoughtful in taking care of your nephew. What a wonderful aunt. @RNmomof2 zone 5 skiing is such great exercise! That's wonderful to have done a ski trip. I'm impressed that you've been able to shed the few holiday pounds already. Well done! @Sueb20 and @gsciencechick great job keeping up with the exercise! I think it' so great for our health to keep ourselves moving. Strength, flexibility, cardio vascular health. All of it! I'm really impressed with how well everyone is taking care of themselves individually. Love feeling motivated by this group. Thanks!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/25/2023
Comments (20)Oh gosh, Pricklypear, I am so sorry you are still ill! Glad you are starting to feel better but hope you can clear it out completely soon! I am second guessing the rower-- more than a couple people have told me that it is HARD. My sister said that it may work for me because I was a competitive swimmer years ago but still have a lot of back strength ... but 1/2 the people who have said it is hard are men who are much stronger than I am. I definitely want to give it a try before i spend any more time shopping for one. I had a very eye opening experience this week. I bought a pair of sunglasses that I had tried on 3 yr ago ... I had taken a photo of me wearing them so I scrolled back through my photos and OMG. I was sooooo much heavier then. I keep saying that I just don't see my losses--especially in my face-- but I was blind and probably in some denial. I was tempted to share a photo in case it would give someone else some encouragement -- but honestly, I can't bring myself to do it. I AM 73 lb lighter. I don't yet feel the pride in that ... I am still working on the disgust (after the fact lol) of how bad I had allowed it to get. unrelated to a healthy lifestyle, here are the sunglasses. The chain on mine is silver-- as I already have sunglasses with gold detailing. They are my first BIG sunglasses. They got a huge thumbs up from my sister....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/20/2023
Comments (21)Things are going well here as far as the exercise goes. I of course can't really lose weight but I'm enjoying going dancing two or three times a week thrown in the mix right now. Going to free summer concerts helps with that. Also we go dancing once a week to alive music pub Friday nights or Saturday nights. The music is pretty good. DH is enjoying tries out different beers one beer each time. Are you ready for fall activities, clothes and food? I'm not ready for Fall. But I am more than ready for Fall. I don't want to stop wearing my summer clothes and going to all the summer dancing that we have been doing. I want the fires to be gone and people to not be too hot who are uncomfortable in the heat. It is weird to feel such Joy in being able to do these summertime activities and feel such sadness for people who are caught in fires and storms and etc. I guess both can exist at the same time but they are uncomfortable together. How are you doing with your healthy lifestyle goals? In as much as I can do my healthy lifestyle style goals are being met. As I said above I can't lose weight. But hopefully I can shift things enough through weight lifting etc to help with my problem areas. I'm looking at you muffin top.. What's going well As I've said before the shortened time span that I eat my meals with IF seems to work very well for me. My weight stays fairly consistent and has ever since I started this program. I don't look at it to help me lose weight as that seems to be a non-starter for me. It does definitely contribute to maintenance. I seem to need to cut out all extra evening snacks to maintain my weight no matter what level of activity I do. What needs more work and focus? I need to weight lift more even if it is body weight lifting and de-stress somehow so that I can lose the excess cortisol in my system and maybe not have a muffin top ;-). Wishing everybody else health and safety. I've been distracted by all these summer activities so haven't said much to individuals. But I think of you all almost every day....See Moregsciencechick
