Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 5/28/2023
Comments (25)As some may have seen on another thread, I traveled to Atlanta this last week so my exercise routine was pretty wrecked for half the week. Over last holiday weekend I spent so many hours doing yard work on top of my usual exercise, so hopefully that made up for it. And one of my days in Atlanta involved a ton of walking through a museum and the aquarium, so that was hopefully beneficial. I am also happy to report that I did not get any gluten sickness on my trip which felt like a big win. But most importantly, the summer only swimming pool is now open for 50m outdoor swimming in the mornings! I'm really hoping they haven't sold out most of the pool to a swim team again like last year. The 50m is more of a workout since you're pushing off from the wall less frequently and I can definitely feel it after each session. I need to get back into my summer routine of cardio in the morning and weights at lunch time since I've been slacking off a bit on the weight lifting. On the weight loss front I think I'm still hovering about where I was in the winter. Maybe down a pound. So maintaining, but I'd like to lose a few more again in the summer to be back where I was at the end of last summer. On a side note, I'm terribly photo phobic and hate having people take photographs of me without my control. Apparently our company photographer snapped a picture of me during our in person company event and the CEO decided that was the photo he would send out to our entire company in his weekly email. Ugh. I am grateful that my immediate reaction wasn't "Oh no, I look fat!" but I still wasn't very happy with how I looked. I wish I could get comfortable with how I look in pictures....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 06/18/2023
Comments (27)Thank you all for the well wishes. She is doing ok for what she has going on. It's eye opening and yet another reminder to age as well as we can. Hospitals and rehabs are not great places to spend a lot of time. She was dr avoidant and anti meds for most of her life, but that just left her with some health issues she just didn't treat - like a way underactive thyroid and high BP. I think those probably played into her current situation. Luckily, the care this time around has been spread between the hospital and my siblings, so we've got a good schedule going. I have been able to exercise and sleep. Part of my new sleep routine is reading a real book before bed, instead of looking at my phone. Right now I am reading this. It's really interesting in that it has actual assessments and plans for improvements. I honestly think I am in decent shape, but the assessments said otherwise:) I feel like I'm agile, but not in these ways I guess. So, lots of mobility issues to work on. I also really like my new 800 gram challenge. I do better with number goals it seems, so instead of just saying eat more fruits and veggies, this is a concrete goal in addition to the 30 different plan products. I relied a lot on nuts and seeds for that, so this is indeed a challenge for me. I have been eating a lot more fruit, which I didn't really eat because of spikes on my CGM. I will have to see how that works when I wear one again, but for now I'm going with it. I do think the fruit reduces other cravings and not great for me foods. I just make sure to eat it with other fiber and fat to hopefully slow down the effect. @gsciencechick -good work on your A1C - sounds like you are headed in a great direction. @jill302 - maintaining is often harder than losing. Good work!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/23/2023
Comments (11)@lucillle - Pilates has so many great things going for it. I bet you get stronger quickly. @Sueb20 - walks and cooking at home sound like the healthiest of weeks. have a great time at the beach. @Funkyart - You are a healthy lifestyle star! It's a long process, so of course you will have weeks more challenging than others, but I know you will bounce back. I really hope you will become comfortable with the walking sticks. I think all the benefits - being outside, stability, freedom, exercise - will really be worth it to you. And please don't let one picture upset you. Everyone can look off in candid pictures. That's why most people take about 20 and then use filters:) It's a very brief second in time, 2 dimensional, with possibly distorted angles. It is not how people see you. I listened to yet another really good podcast I'd like to share. This one really hit home for me I guess, because although the guest was an expert, he was also an actual trainer that had worked with mostly women for the last 20 years. And it's something about knowing what works for real people that makes me want to try their ideas. His wasn't anything new - the old building muscle line :) But for some reason the way he said it really hit home with me. He talked about muscle giving you the flexibility to eat more/not be so strict with your food choices. I've heard it a lot, but he pointed out he would physically train his clients for a month or so before they even talked about food. Because the small change in muscle, strength, the way they carried their bodies, all made them believers. He also said if he had a client that would work with him AND a therapist at the same time, the results were phenomenal! The psychology of food, eating, weight, appearances - it's pretty complicated stuff. So I did pretty well this week, prioritizing 15-20 minutes of weights before my walk. Walking is good, but this is going to be my number one priority for awhile. If I still want to walk or play pickleball, etc. in addition to my weights, then fine. But they are getting done every day. Here's the link to the video podcast- Focus on Muscle - of course you can find it on Apple or Spotify if you want to listen. @Feathers11 - your post from last week was right after I listened and I thought to myself - that's exactly what he said would happen! Keep us posted on the gym plan. I'm considering that myself, but for now I have enough weights and equipment at home to keep me going for awhile. I hope everyone has a great week!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 8/27/2023
Comments (23)Oh yes-- loving the cool mornings! It is 52 this morning ... my walk was short this morning but it was lovely! I am just so glad to be able to get out! I just saw a short video about clothing fit .. they did a comparison of a "good enough" fit vs "proper fit". Her point was that many women can/should go down 1-2 sizes. I have noticed the same recently .. sure, I have gone down sizes as I've lost weight but right before my vacation, I realized I was still wearing a number of clothes too big. Of course, I have lost a lot of weight and I am not going to replace my whole wardrobe so I do have some clothes that are oversized .. but even in the clothes I am replacing, I was sticking too close to my old sizes. My new strategy is to size down an extra size on base pieces and then keep wearing my oversized tees, sweaters and jackets. I went down an additional 2 sizes in tanks and an one size in long sleeve tees and athletic shorts. It has made a huge difference. Fall is great for this strategy -- I now have a few pairs of jeans, a short jean skirt and a long jean skirt that fit fairly well. I can add a belt (i splurged on all new belts a few months ago) a trim top and then layer on whatever I want! It helps that I have broad shoulders as I can carry off an oversized sweater or jacket. I am ready for some fun fall events and outings! I know this is a fairly self-indulgent post lol ... but I do think that looking good and put together as I am losing weight helps keep me motivated and most importantly feeling good about myself. I still have 60-70 lbs to lose so I think this strategy will also help me be wiser about what I DO buy. I admit, I bought some dresses this summer that weren't my best picks. They made me feel great when I bought them but 10lb later, they are too big and not as flattering as they were when they fit perfectly. I shouldn't be buying styles that are so fitted that 10-15 lb take them from sharp to dumpy. One final recent lesson-- I am fairly anti-shapewear. I am anti spanx. I just don't like squeezing myself into shapewear and I don't like how I feel wearing them. I feel like I am trussed and bound and can't move comfortably. Enter Shapermint -- they are SO easy to put on and really do help smooth the bumps and bulges particularly in stomach/muffin top area. They are also pretty affordable compared to some of the other shapewear products. I don't wear them every day -- or even regularly-- but I could! They are comfortable and easy enough to wear that I will throw them on with a pair of jeans if I want to look especially smooth and trim. I know it is not all about appearance -- improving my health is the goal but part of good mental health is feeling good about ourselves. I feel great about my progress but I haven't always felt good about my appearance. These little tweaks have me feeling good about the face I am presenting to the world so I am more inclined to go out and be more social. I smile more and I engage more. So many of us struggle with our appearance ... we focus on what we perceive as our flaws. We look in the mirror and frown (or is that just me? lol). Let's make an effort to be good to ourselves this holiday weekend! I don't have any plans or events this weekend but I am going to make sure that I don't look in the mirror and frown! I will smile at the people i see instead of looking down at the ground or stare off in the distance. I will engage positively with myself!...See MoreRelated Professionals
