Comments (10)I believe that the oil from the Alaska pipeline is sold to Asia. Alaska is so far from the rest of the US that it makes no logistical sense to ship it here, it is closer to Japan. In any case, that oil and the offshore oil have been part of our oil supply all along and have made no significant dent in what we import. Our use has gone up up up since the oil shortages of the 1970s and we did nothing to change that over the past 30 years. We have lived off of cheap oil from the Mideast and buried our heads in the sand when anybody suggested it was a bad plan. Why is anybody surprised that this could happen to us again when we did nothing to lower the growth of our dependency on foreign oil? The hated President Carter had tax incentives for oil companies to explore shale oil extraction and for other alternative energy sources. Regan dropped those programs and Americans have ignored the issue for the last 30 years. If you voted for Regan, oilman Bush or failed oilman Bush, you supported this. Clinton did not address the issue, either. Until last year, Congress did not up the CAFE standards for gas mileage for the US produced cars. They have been the same for decades. The only way to get industry to spend money on changing the way we use energy is to give them tax incentives or legistlate mandatory changes- or wait until demand makes alternative energy exploration financially viable. We waited until demand forced the issue. The problem with that is that there is a lag time in which the cost of energy skyrockets. During that time, the lower income people suffer the most. That is what is happening now. If you let supply and demand run the marketplace, you get these huge swings that hurt the little guy and enrich the wealthy investors. Since Americans are so afraid of government intervention, we let the market forces drive things. So prepare to suffer. Next time, remember that government intervention (like current subsidies for wind farms) can even out the peaks and valleys and protect us from the cruel vagaries of an unchecked marketplace....See MoreHIgh cholesterol diet
Comments (22)I had my annual physical at the end of May, and my cholesterol was 299. I immediately cut out all sugar and refined carbs and trans fats. I walked 40 minutes a day. I ate healthy low-carb whole foods like baked or grilled chicken, wild salmon, grass-fed beef maybe once a week, fish, eggs, legumes (primarily red or black beans), LOTS of vegetables (but no potatoes), avocados, and some fruit (mostly berries and apples). Healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil. I never felt deprived or hungry. For snacks, I ate nuts, mostly almonds and walnuts, but also some pecans and pistachios. One of my favorite snacks is apple pieces dipped into almond butter. Homemade kale chips are good, too. For beverages, I stuck to water and lots of it, and tea (green, white or Rooibos). I took a high quality fish oil supplement, not the ones you buy at the grocery store. And for a sweetener, I use "Just Like Sugar." I like it better than Stevia and you definitely want to avoid aspartame. Although after a short while of no sweets, I lost my desire for them and seldom used the Just Like Sugar. After 3 months (and 20 pounds lighter) I had my cholesterol re-checked and it was down to 224. I don't need to lose much more weight, but I'm going to continue on this eating plan because I feel soooo much better. I think the key is to reduce inflammation, I think that is the real culprit to much of what ails us. Good luck to your SO. Comments (40)Just catching up with this thread. I am in the same boat as Mtn. Incredibly down compared to normal. When all the nonsense in life started, wise old me thought, This is all going to pass soon. Then Covid came, Science will win, I thought. And now, well the problems keep piling up, and science is in a stalemate with the virus. The economy is doing what its doing, which will hurt many people and affect politics. Gun violence, like teen suicides, appears to be contageous. My very deep reserve of optimism is running low. And my response has been pathetic. I just had a slice of Basque cheesecake for lunch (I didn't buy or make it, DS2 is home and he likes the kitchen, darn it. I call him, The destroyer of my good intentions.) Comments (37)@legomom, the sit/stand thing is always an concern for me-- I have a genetic blood disease that greatly increases the chance of blood clots... and now that I am working at home, I sit much more than ever. I don't think a standing desk would work for me but I should consider one... in the short term I can definitely get up in move. I think my neighborhood is similar to yours-- not all roads have sidewalks but it is safe and "walkable" .. but you can't really walk anywhere. You can walk the neighborhood. I would be ok with that except that my vision issues make it unsafe for me. I can best walk with someone in front of me-- which is a possibility maybe if i can get a walking partner. I basically have no depth perception, double vision and poor focus. I can't focus on moving things or changing focal points. I am best in full light with high contrast. I am a mess, huh? lol. I really do love the idea of short stints of exercise-- i am going to start tomorrow! No-- now, I REALLY need to get up. My behind hurts! ETA I think I could walk on a track without issues.. but since I don't drive that is a little bit of an issue. I may uber to a track once a week.. or try to rope a niece into walking with me.
