How to properly care for my trees
Comments (19)Luey, be VERY careful with insecticidal soap right now. It's just too hot in your area to use it, you'll fry the leaves right off, now. Temps need to be below 85 degrees to use it. If you will get your citrus healthy and thriving, the chances of pests attacking your citrus are drastically reduced. The only pests I deal with are snails/slugs and Citrus Leaf Miner. I don't need to do anything but put down Sluggo in the winter and spring/early summer, and then spray for CLM in July. Let's get more water to stay in the root zone for your citrus right now. Once they recover, you can fertilize. If you fertilize in the state they're in right now (stressed), you can burn the roots. It's water and shade right now. You may need to amend the holes, top with LOTS of compost (6" I would guess or more), top with 2 or 3 more inches of mulch, keeping the mulch and compost away from the trunks. Definitely talk with your Master Gardeners or see about going to a class or seminar about citrus and fruit tree growing in your area. You have some very unique needs, but for sure it can be done. Comments (8)Always happy to strike up debate. As my Mom always said, "I'd argue with a fence post." Anywho.. what I have done is I got an Ivory BAR, grated it down and then added water to it in a gallon jar. Over a couple days with some shaking, it's now the consistency of(excuse the gross out) human snot. I then add a TB of it to a tank sprayer per gal of water(which I've read recently that if I have an alkali water, insecticidal soaps(commercial or homemade) are worthless), sometimes add a TB of Canola oil, shake it real well, let it sit for a couple hours, then go spray, shaking often as I do. I just happened to notice whenever I add the vinegar, the soap solids curdle(oil added or not). Maybe I should do what I did last time and use the water from the fridge which is filtered, but without the vinegar? At least this way I start with a more neutral water ph? Ken: you're funny... :) You always make me feel like I'm doing things the right way ;) kimmsr: I also have some castile bars but I've read that if there's additives like olive oil and fragrance that I shouldn't use. Here's the ingredients list and the label name--Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate, Water, Glycerine, Sodium Chloride, Fragrance, Titanium Dioxide, Lanolin, Citric Acid, Olive Oil, Preservative. -- Castile Beauty Soap with Olive Oil. Thanks all. Kevin...See Moreneed help with ID
Comments (6)Thank you everyone for the ID's. I've been googling for an hour, trying to figure out the best way to deal with them - looks like damage control right now (pull them up) and pre-emergents/post-emergents/yank 'em/tons of mulch next spring. I about fainted when I read your other common names kman - "shatterstone" "stonebreaker"?? and the description of the thing "each capsule (under EACH pair of leaves) contains six (SIX??) seeds"!! If you could see my yard you'd understand this - I'M DOOMED!!! Also excited - I got a "Rose Mallow" hibiscus (which is already blooming this morning, red flowers the size of saucers), and a "Lady in Red" hydrangea and a couple of white lantana for planters yesterday, - as soon as the rain lets up I'm outside!! Weed, plant, weed more sounds like the plan for the day. Thanks again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Lesley...See MoreRhizo (and others): coconut oil?
Comments (17)Nicole --- We use two different brands of organic coconut oil -- Tropical Traditions Gold Label and Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. I always order the Tropical Traditions directly from their website, and order the Nutiva from Amazon.com. I always put a tablespoon of it in my coffee, and I use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I also drink coconut milk, not dairy milk, and eat coconut milk ice cream and coconut milk yogurt. The "regular" coconut milk yogurt is "runnier" than dairy yogurt (and really creamy) but the coconut milk greek yogurt is thick and creamy like dairy greek yogurt....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
