new here....need help
Comments (17)Thanks for all the pics. A couple of thoughts: the high end laminate is pretty durable (except for hot items). Porcelain tile is also durable; the concern for many people are the grout lines which can be difficult to keep clean. You can use larger tiles with very thin grout lines in a color that closely matches the tile. This will minimize maintenance and give you a clean, more modern look compared to traditional tile counter tops. I do have a concern about using tile for the counter tops, back splash and floor. That's a lot of tile. An alternative to tile or laminate would be the prefab granite slabs remodelfla mentioned. They are real stone and can be a great bargain if you don't need a lot of cuts or curved lines. One consideration is your cabinets. You need to make sure that they are level and solid enough to support the weight of the granite. Another option would be butcher block. It is also affordable (more costly than laminate or tile but much less than stone) and would provide a great contrast to the tile back splash and flooring. If you want to introduce a more MCM vibe, you could stain the butcher block dark -- a walnut stain would be lovely and would go well with your blue/gray walls. Hope this helps....See MoreRedoing NYC Kitchen and need help
Comments (10)Induction won't work in nyc. Most apartments with gas have 60-100a service for the entire unit...so dedicating 40-50a isn't practical. There are quite a few quality 30" ranges available. Wolf is a good quality piece. Miele as well but that adds self cleaning. It depends very much on what you cook. If you have a little time, our NYC PIRCH showroom is opening on may 21st. We will have a Thermador live to cook on for the first 2 months, plus a bunch of other stuff on display....See MoreNeed help for small kitchen redo on a budget
Comments (16)I would work on the lighting and the microwave over the range. Change the large fluorescent fixture and install under cabinet lighting - that may take most of your budget for now. One of my friends is refreshing a similar kitchen and so far she has added new lighting - it already looks so much prettier - even with her older counters. The microwave might not bother you but i am short and don't like reaching up over the range and I also prefer an open cooking area. A microwave/vent also does not vent well compared to a dedicated vent. Your layout is good and this is really a very nice kitchen. I would also add a pretty window treatment. I have a similar kitchen and did not paint as I prefer wood and was concerned with the durability of a DIY paint job - I've seen some a year later and they don't always hold up great - then one has to invest in new cabinets. Do really good paint prep. Your cabinets might be maple which means they will paint up better than oak. It could just be the pic but I am not seeing the wood grain I would expect with oak. My oak kitchen is in a vintage / cottage style: https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~110720042 https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~109854029...See MoreNEED HELP with Kitchen Redo
Comments (26)have the floor redone in a leathered texture! now that would look cool. they can apply a sealer afterward. (but it's granite. it's really not going to be an issue with water or stains!) Here's a leathered surface. honed would work too, the leather has a bit more texture. for sure would be way less slippery. You'd basically get something like this, but in your pattern/color. Much less "in your face" from what you have now. This way you can concentrate on your cabinets and countertop call in a marble restoration person and they can take off that shine w/diff grinding pads. (they can always buff it up again to gloss if you don't like it....See MoreLindsay
