Depending on your new style, I think it would look stunning with an all white space.

I would Paint all the woodwork and cabinets White. and keep the decor simple, remove all the 'dated' art. either sell or paint the shelving unit(s) and dining table/chairs Black (I'd redo the chairs in a pattern & color you LOVE... a feature.) . Looks like a fun re hab project I would love.

Once it is honed, is it still waterproof?.. do you know if it will stain? or is it still technically sealed? thanks for the advice everyone.. i just feel so bad ripping up this floor that is in great condition. The cabinets can be taken down and sold or donated so i dont feel so badly.

I think this depends on if you are doing a major renovation where everything else will be replaced, in which case yes, replace the floors too. If you are just hoping to do a quick update, then it's worth trying to work with it. If you are removing the cabinets especially, then it's a chance to redo the flooring.

I kinda like it because it's so unusual. You will need to have no pattern in your counters. I would probably do white or black cabinets. Definitely put down a big rug in the dining room under the table. Get rid of any beige and honey tones -- maybe stain the trim more of a neutral tone or paint it.

I wouldn't recommend putting a super modern kitchen into a more traditional house. There are styles that will feel more updated while still fitting into the rest of your home. If you are planning on getting new cabinets, I wouldn't save the dated granite floor tile. It would (or should) dictate every design decision you make with the black and violet gray tones!

I think you could do black base and island cabinets and a warm tone upper. That would look really nice!

I do agree about being too modern in a traditional home. Maybe look for the more current door shapes and then do something interesting with backsplash or fixtures.

I would get a quote on honing that tile in place. It might be cost prohibitive. You will need to test it out somewhere inconspicuous - not all granites look good when honed.

It kind of has terrazzo vibes. If you Pinterest "black terrazzo floors" you might get some ideas. That would mean going with a mid-century vibe; I'm imagining butcher block counters and brass & natural wood accents; jute rugs. But to Amy's point -- it'll be a big design feature if you keep it, so only do so if you find that you love it and want to.

The main question is what you mean by renovating kitchen and dining room -- for example, might you be removing the wall between, or widening the door? Because that might force you to replace flooring. Otherwise, I think it's amazing, and I'd be tempted to try to find some kind of putty cabinets that would really make the floor pop.

Jessica - that floor is rather fascinating. Is it tile? I can’t make out any grout lines…

have the floor redone in a leathered texture! now that would look cool. they can apply a sealer afterward. (but it's granite. it's really not going to be an issue with water or stains!)

Here's a leathered surface. honed would work too, the leather has a bit more texture. for sure would be way less slippery.

You'd basically get something like this, but in your pattern/color.

Much less "in your face" from what you have now. This way you can concentrate on your cabinets and countertop

call in a marble restoration person and they can take off that shine w/diff grinding pads. (they can always buff it up again to gloss if you don't like it.

I was NOT going to widen the doorways. I am getting rid of that island thing in the kitchen and getting something smaller but the flooring goes under that island as well.

By "putty" I mean a warm gray, which I think would be wow here. I tried to colorize your current cabinets, and I made the trim white, but I'll admit that all the island business made it hard, and I'm not so sure I did a great job of removing that... :)

we had to enlarge ours for the fridge, and it looks like this. YOu don't need that heavy trim work.

what kind of cabinets are you going to do? countertop?

one of these French kitchen table/islands may look cool w/your flooring.

then you could actually do a larger rug and cover a lot of that tile. would give you more design options
