Are you quilting this weekend? May 20-21

I haven't gone into my sewing room for a couple days. Today I am not feeling very well, just too tired to go up the stairs. I hope I will have more energy when I get up tomorrow morning. Friday I went shopping with DD and her girls in the afternoon. It started to pour down rain while we were in our last store. We got drenched getting the girls back into their car seats. The girl from the last store gave us a huge umbrella to use but it was raining so hard that we both got wet.

This past week I have been working on some old BOMs from JA Fabrics that I bought years ago when I first became interested in quilting. If I feel better tomorrow, that is what I will be sewing.

Linda, I hope you're feeling better soon. I went through about six weeks of colds and infections and feeling crappy. I had no energy for anything except quilting. I got a lot of quilting done, but everything else suffered. I'm feeling better now, so I get to garden, wash windows, etc., etc. Maybe being sick wasn't so bad after all.

I'm working on a blue and green tropical print quilt for a friend of mine who lives in Hawaii. Her husband has been going through chemo and radiation for tongue and throat cancer, but he decided to stop treatment and go into hospice. She has been physically and emotionally exhausted trying to care for him. I hope it is over soon for both of their sakes. What a horrible disease.

It's been so cold and rainy here. Daytime highs were between 45 and 52 - way too cold for this time of year. The gardens are loving all the rain though. And I get to quilt without feeling guilty. I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Hope you aren't coming down with what Hubby had in the last 2 weeks. It knocked the stuffing out of him, upper respiratory. There are several with the same thing where he works. I got some quilting done yesterday, might not today, have to be somewhere at noon. I'm quilting a spiraling circle starting from the middle of this square quilt, lots of wrestling with turning the quilt every few inches of stitching. I started out with free motion and then switched to walking foot. I happened to see a couple of quilts online that were done this way and decided I'd like to try. I'm liking how it's turning out but not liking the struggle. But I'm afraid that no matter what technique I use from now on it will be a struggle with this arthritis settling in both hands and wrists. I hope I won't get to the point where I just can't do it anymore, if I can't make a quilt from start to finish I'm afraid I won't continue at all. I took a lesson on a long-arm hoping it would be easier in case I couldn't do it at home anymore. It wasn't. In fact it was extremely painful on my bad wrist.

Donna, I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I hope she recovers quickly. Linda, what a cool quilt! I have a friend who has a birthday in November, and he hinted that he wanted a quilted tote bag so I've been playing with half and quarter square triangles... they aren't perfect, but I'm learning. He plays the piano and sings and his favorite color is pink and he likes rainbows, so I though this would be an appropriate fabric selection.... Not sure if I'll have it done by the 4th... I'm not going to get to work on it tomorrow because I'm going to Ocala to visit my grandmother... she hand quilts (only), and I'm going to bring my rail fence to show her... not done yet, but it's a work in progress. I nearly had a heart attack last night... I was surfing Craig's List for sewing machines as I frequently do, and found an add for a Bernina 820. I thought they were asking 500 dollars, and just before my heart stopped, I realized there was a 3 in front of the five! Oops... glad I didn't e-mail them! Not quite ready to spend almost as much on a sewing machine as a cheap used car!

Theresa...great quilt...love the colors! Congrats on three finishes...I know how good that feels! And Lois...that is going to be perfect for a guy quilt...the colors and design are perfect! I tried improv once, had fun, but didn't quite know when to stop...silly I know. I'm looking forward to seeing this finished! I have a few tops complete, and have decided it's time to find a longaremer to get them quilted. Trying to finagle them thru a small throat is just more effort than I'm up for...love doing the quilting on small quilts, but anything larger than a lap size and I'm tuckered out. While my upper arms need the work out, the rest of me just wants it done :-) I keep saying I'm going to start an Irish chain, but I must finish my leaf block and mail to Beverly...my weekend objective before going to back to work on Monday. My machine is working very well. I only had one thread break and that was because it was twisting as it came off of the spool. I turned it around and all went well after that. I finished a "Hungry Caterpillar" quilt and want to load another one just like it on the frame this evening. I got carried away with the caterpillar panels when they first came out and bought enough to make three. My oldest grandson has the first one and Samantha will get the one I made today. The third is going to a great-nephew who was born in January. I give the coordinating book with the quilt. I made the binding when I made the quilt tops so I have it machine sewn and ready for the hand stitching later tonight. The weather is beautiful today. I have the window open in my sewing room and it is still 73 degrees in the room. I'm feeling very productive today! lol Linda OH

I am FINALLY going to get a chance to do a little quilting tonight! We had a dinner theater show Friday night, then worked at our Lions Club pancake breakfast on Saturday and hosted 20 people from church for a potluck at our house last night! This morning I helped a rescue group transport 2 puppies from Ft. Collins to Cheyenne, WY this morning, then came home and weeded in my raspberries since has FINALLY stopped raining here! I have a comfort quilt pieced and sandwiched and need to get it done by Tuesday afternoon. Will post photos when I get it done!

Linda, I hope you feel better soon!

Lois, I'm so sorry for your friend and her husband. I know it's extremely difficult for her, but I can see his side of it, too, if the treatment, which often makes you very sick, is only prolonging your suffering.

Rita, I'm sorry about your arthritis! I don't know much about it; I see lots of ads on TV for pain relief. Is there not really much they can do about it? The doctor said I had some arthritis in my shoulder but that it was removed when he did my rotator cuff surgery.

I finally finished my En Provence top yesterday! My shoulder is still stiff and weak, so sewing and ironing for prolonged periods make it ache a lot. I'll post a picture when I can get it in good lighting.

Today I'm going to clean the machine and iron some clothes.
