How to fix my curtain panel screw up
Comments (30)Fabricland had tons of stuff but nothing that would work. The fabrics were very upholstery like and not suited for a child's room. They did have some specifically geared towards kids but those were only 84". @mlweaving_Marji, what you said makes perfect sense. Although I will have to come up with a new plan as I won't be able to sew anything together. Even if I attempted it, I don't the time. We go from 6:30am until 10:30pm every week day, and have one day's worth of free time on the weekend which is used for grocery shopping, cleaning, etc. I could look into a seamstress but I wouldn't expect it to be cheap here. 2 years ago I got straps shortened on a top (nothing fancy or difficult about it) and it cost $25. The top was only $50. Ha ha. Hemming pants costs $20. We installed the rod yesterday and hung the panels and they definitely need more width. Even if they are directly over the window/frame, light creeps through the sides. And it looks like it needs more width. The silk ones are really nice though and nice quality. Unfortunately, Pottery Barn screwed up and one panel, even though it says 96" is 84". Sigh. So no matter what, something has to go back which is going to involve extra shipping costs, etc. Since I have to go through that gong show, I could see if I can scrounge up enough to purchase more panels of what I already have, but if I can't put them up without being sewn together, that doesn't help me much either. WHY do they make panels so narrow? They are designing 2 panels to fit a 36" window? Our windows aren't even overly large for the room and they are wider than that. If they made them wider, they would still work on narrow windows but also work on wider windows. Comments (30)I don't really see the advantage of the peninsula in the double L from the original post. I think the traffic flow would be much improved (especially around the refrigerator and range) without it. You could also move the sink closer to the nook, which would help the traffic flow to the DR (especially with the DW open). You'd lose a bit of storage, but corner cabinets are not ideal (were you thinking a lazy susan/super susan, or did you think you would access that cab from the other side of the peninsula?) The ideas put forth by Mama Goose and RL are great, but I wanted to throw out a less ambitious (i.e. cheaper) suggestion....See Morehelp fixing kitchen island - side panel
Comments (6)That's a veneer panel that is so thin that I can't imagine it was held in place by nails. I suspect that whatever the glue was it was insufficient or has failed. To fix it, first take the panel completely off, since it looks like at least half of it has come away and is being partially held on by the electrical plate. Then you would need to buy good quality carpenter's glue like Titebond and spread it evenly with a roller and position the panel back in place. The hard part for you is that it does need to be clamped, and I suspect that you don't have much in the way of specialized clamps to do this. If you have doors on both sides of the island, you could temporarily remove them, cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to the size of the panel, and then clamp this up against the panel while the glue dries. If you don't have doors on both sides, there are other ways to do clamping, but it's more complicated and I'm not going to try to detail it here. If this sounds like it exceeds your skills and available supply of clamps, then you need to get a handyman or cabinet person in to do the repair....See MoreOutlets on side of kitchen islands? Are there any other options?
Comments (76)@LH CO/FL, I think you've been misinformed. The current Florida residential building code is based on the 2018 IRC which requires a receptacle outlet at a kitchen island. The code citation can be found earlier in this thread. The next code cycle (2021 IRC) provides a formula for the number of receptacle outlets required based on the area of the island with a minimum of one receptacle. I can't foresee any future version of the code requiring less than one receptacle outlet at an island which is intended to preclude the scenario Mark Bischak so entertainingly described....See MoreGiz Design Studio LLC
