Call a professional floor finisher and get a valid opinion.

My first house had original wood floors that were painted and were really dinged up. we had them professionally sanded and sealed natural, no stain. Turned out great. It was not cheap though. Around 3K and many years ago and about 1000 sf but it looks a whole lot better than laminate.

i agree with jfcwood. call a few contractors out and see what they say, more times than not, you can save a floor. throwing laminate over it is just a cheap and fast solution which can be fine, nothing wrong with it, but if you want hardwood and are willing to pay than get some estimates.

To elaborate, maybe your contractor is right but I recommend speaking to an expert. The floors condition looks decent in your pictures but for all I know it might be a 5/16" thick t&g floor that's already been sanded once and can't take another one. What width? Do you know the thickness? When a solid wood floor is worn out, one can generally see a lot of exposed nails and/or splintering along the edge above the groove (because it's very thin). You may also have the option of preparing the floor and either painting it a different color or painting a cool design on it.

As jfcwood suggests, having a better look at the floor will determine what is possible. If you have a floor vent, go ahead and lift that up to see if you have MORE than 3mm of wood above the tongue (3mm = 1/8"). If there is then you have a CHANCE at paint removal turning into a finished hardwood.

Then the question becomes how old is the house? Is it *possible the paint has LEAD in it? Paint was allowed to have a substantial lead content right into the late 1970's.

It looks like something was covering the paint - was it carpet? That's possibly why the paint looks in good shape. In essence, someone painted this floor for a reason. It is possible that reason was simply to save money (we see it all the time on Houzz), but it is HIGHLY POSSIBLE that paint was the only option - because they were OUT of options.

So...before you set yourself up to fail, have a strong look at what is going on with the WOOD. Check the amount above the tongue. Start there. It is homeowner friendly so long as you can find a floor register. Get your tape measure out...and write down what you find.
