Happy Mother's Day
Comments (10)Happy Mothers day to everyone! Hope you got some gifts related to your gardens! I got spoiled with great stuff this year - my son gave me a nice tube of that too expensive to buy but wonderful as a gift (smile) Crabtree and Evelyn "Gardeners Hand Therapy". Hands are looking pretty rough, so it was very much appreciated! DDDDH came through with this sit upon garden scooter/cart that is really sturdy in cast metal with an adjustable seat like those old time tracters had - wide and it turns to accomadate all the "moves" I make when planting out. I do all my gardening from a sit on cart cause I have bad knees, so this replaces half broken plastic ones I have. This is a cadillac! Ok, so I'd torn the ad out of a catalog and left the page on my bulletin board (very subtle..)but if he's gonna buy something, might as well be something I want/need (or he get something silly I DON'T need, like earrings!) Shared M-day with my son's confirmation, so we had the whole family out for a BBQ - nice. Sun held all day and once everyone packed up (around 6pm), I still had some time in the garden! Taking a day off from work tomorrow to do some major planting out. Hope it warms up soon - everything planted out so far looks so tiny! Nancy...See MoreHappy Mother's Day

Comments (7)Thank you everyone for your kind comments. I bought ($13.99) a 'kit' with a fiberglass pole and plexiglass stabilizer bars from a seasonal garden center. They were out of pots so I had to get them elsewhere. The bottom pot is a 12" pot and the others are 8". You must have pots with the drainage hole in the bottom to go over the pole. The stabilizer bars fit down inside the bottom pot so it will be less likely to tip over. I placed it up against the house because I have 2 little hyper dogs and two little hyper girls and I was afraid it would get knocked over. Flowers and all, it was probably around $50, but something I will be able to use over and over. If I have sense enough to bring the terra cotta pots in over the winter. Otherwise they will crack and break if they freeze. There is a website, but I'm not sure if you can buy retail. Here is a link that might be useful: flipflopflowerpot...See MoreHappy Mothers Day! 2 questions from a first time planter.
Comments (14)Woo Hoo! and I hope you had a nice Mother's Day, too! Lisa is absolutely right about winter sowing but we won't get into that right now. What did you start your seeds in? Peat pots, peat pellets?? If you started them in the peat pellets that you soak and they swell up into cute little balls of soil, that would be great for your morning glories since they don't really like to be transplanted. If you started them in soil that you placed in tiny pots, just be careful when you transplant them, not to disturb the roots much. Also morning glories are best grown in lean soil, so unamended, non fertilized soil is best. It's a lil late for snapdragons as they like it cool. Once the weather warms up, they don't like it too much and will get kinda raggedy. But persist, water them well, and they are likely to give you pretty blooms in fall. Salvias love the heat. I don't know which ones you planted and there are tons of them. There are some that are perennial, and some that are annual. A lot of the annuals will reseed for you next year. Many bloom in the fall, and many bloom in summer until fall. But they usually grow quite well from seed. I have lots of seedlings I grew this year that are close to going in the ground. As Dawn mentioned there are seeds you can sow directly in the ground now, too, like Cosmos, Zinnias, Mexican Sunflowers, Purple or White Hyacinth Bean (vine), Cardinal Climber (vine), and Cypress Vine (red, white, or pink), marigolds, and many other annuals. And most of all, have fun! Susan...See Morecattyles
