Comments (3)Thanks for the welcoming messages! I think I'm in the right place. Angelclub, I recognized your name and remember your kitchen, too - one of my favorites. MeMo, a neighbor told me we were in Zone 4 - zoned a little cooler than the map would indicate because of strong lake winds, she said. Now that I've determined I'm in the right forum, I'll get pictures this weekend of the yard area I want to work on to post. There is a link to my current Photobucket pics that show the house and its setting in the Finished Kitchens Blog under "amck kitchen" if anyone cares to take a look. I'm so happy to be done with building, and am looking forward to trying my hand at gardening. I've been yearning to do this for years!...See MoreBeginner in need of Pest Control Advice
Comments (3)Im sorry you didnt get a quicker response. Im a beginner to and I have heard that too much alcohol and water spraying can damage the leaves of a plant. This may or may not have cause some of your troubles. There are plenty of people who use this technique successfully and others like me that have killed plants with these soap/water/alcohol/etc. solutions. Heres a site that may help... http://www.allexperts.com/browse.cgi?catLvl=3&catID=721 Will Creed is really good, I would ask him. Pictures would help diagnose the problem as well....See MoreBeginner advice needed
Comments (2)The peppers and tomatoes are best started inside under lights. If you have a decent local nursery, they will also sell transplants. Sweet peppers are hard. Hot peppers are much easier, and a few plants can produce more peppers than you can imagine. If you have the lights, the peppers can be started now. If you want to try to grow them in windowsills, I'd wait for a couple of weeks. The transplants are set out sometime around Memorial Day. Peas are something I usually plant around April 15th. They can be planted earlier, but will just sit there until the ground warms up, and in the meantime can rot....See MoreBeginner Gardener Needs Advice
Comments (5)Gardening has two branches, the fruiting and the decorative, so I don't know which you are aiming for. Assuming the fruity type, one thing that's coming is the super-hot weather and with that a general (but not total or inescapable) pollen death, and so keep in mind that there are varieties of plants that fruit without pollination. Also a smaller plot like a 4 X 4 won't self-shade well, so you might need to add some somehow if you have plants that can't take the direct sun.. One quirk about Az: there are many best guesses about last frost date, and NOAA's is the beginning of April! Tucson got NO frost after the beginning of January, so if you follow the common wisdom you'd be running as much as three months late. It often pays to not listen to too much advice about timing. Of course that could also come right back at you and bite bad. When it works, you get to do this in April......See MoreSamantha May
