I would ask in the kitchen forum as they have lots of experience with this.

I will check there too, but I'd like to know what people are doing to prepare for it too. Running wires or outlets, where are they located, etc. For example, you're in the process of building a new house. What are you planning for under-cabinet lighting?

Legrand has some new under cabinet "high end" plugmold that has lights, receptacles, USB chargers, tablet docks, etc....

I plan on using the hardwired lights from IKEA that have sections in many lengths, as well as sections with plugs and USB outlets. In our electrical drawings it's just indicated as under-cabinet lighting.

If the counter is polished stone, the reflection of tape and puck lights is much more noticeable.

I like even light, but if the little discs/pucks put out enough light then I may pick them. I will have laminate or a quartz countetop, so not super reflective. Definitely want hard wired. Are you guys placing the outlet below, in, or above the wall cabinets (assuming you have wall cabinets)?

JDS, my electrician is letting me pick. Common place he does it is in a cabinet running low voltage from that and putting the switch whereever I want. But I'm not sure if I want an outlet in a cabinet instead of maybe on top where the wires and transformer won't stick out.

I just went through this. If you want LED UC lighting, you have two choices and you have to make the choices early. One, you can hardwire and select series of unit where each unit has an integral transformer. Two, you can do the LED strips with low-voltage wiring and a master transformer. The master transformer must be placed somewhere out of sight but accessible. If the transformer ever goes bad, you want to be able to get to it to replace it. Most of the time, it will be out of sight out of mind. The transformer will be large enough, think the size of a mans shoe, that you won't want to put it in a wall cabinet because it will clobber your storage space.

The integral units can cost a lot of money if you buy some of the name brand ones. I found an electrical supply company on Amazon that sold them mail order for a reasonable price. I was able to actually get someone on the phone to explain the process. My project was a renovation. The hardwiring and switches were already in the walls. I was too far along to make the LED strips work.

My advice, make your decision early. Once you understand your choices, it gets a lot easier.

We did below-cabinet and above-cabinet tape lights. Below-cabinet and above-cabinet tape lights were each controlled with their own switch. We used a switch with a dimmer for the above-cabinet tape lights -- it's great for subtle lighting in the evening with an open floor plan.
