How could that possibly happen? Seems to me it could happen when your tired was being changed at some point.

Wow, that's crazy. And there could be another car out there with the other half stuck in their tire.

We ended up with a 6 inch long, diameter of a pencil, drill bit in a tire. The electronics in my husband's car indicated a problem with the right front tire. Turns out that tire was fine and the drill bit was in the left rear.

How do those items even get in a tire?

I almost didn't believe it either but I saw the tip of it sticking out when I pulled over to look. The owner of the tire shop offered an explanation - of sorts. He said the pliers (or half ) were laying in the road and when my front tire went over it they torqued or lifted and they hit the rear tire in such a way that the force and weight of the rear tire drove it in.

And all of this happened under 25 miles per hour. Just a freak happening.

Never saw such a thing, I agree - you should get the annual award.

I am thankful you are OK, as sometimes flats can cause accidents. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to walk the 1/4 mile sometime soon and see if you can find (and dispose of) the other half.

Lucille - I did go back the next day because I had agreed to pick up my friend's mail for a week but I couldn't find anything.

lukkiirish - The tire was ruined but the best part of having to buy a new tire is that DH and I had discussed putting 4 new tires on my car soon - so this just hurried that up a little.

That's crazy! A plier -- lol. All I ever find is glass, nails and screws.

Also very glad you're all right. I was in a car as a young woman when the tire blew at the bottom of a hill. I was thrown from the car along with everyone else after the car completed it's spins against the oncoming lane's curbside. Almost everyone was able to walk away from the accident luckily, except for the drunk who was speeding and ran into our car and killed himself. We were lucky we had no seat belts on or we'd have been smashed up too. Weird as I'd never go in a car without seat belts nowadays. I check my tires regularly like clockwork.

Yipes! That would be a tire destroyer for sure! I hit a piece of what I thought was sheetrock in the road-another car had thrown it in my path and I couldn't swerve fast enough. I figured my tires would be fine-since they were heavy duty, super thick truck tires, but nope-it destroyed my tire, whatever it was that I ran over. Or maybe it hit the sidewall just right, not sure. Whatever it was tore my tire to pieces. Like you, it was nearly time to get new tires anyway so I did. And I was shocked when the tire store clerk told me I had the wrong type of tires on my truck to begin with. I'd bought them from the same local chain, and apparently they put tires that are to be used if you live on a farm or haul heavy trailers with. I haul stuff on occasion in the bed, but seldom tow a trailer, and I live in the city. My new tires cost 1/3 of the last set I'd had put on, and they drive down the road soooo much nicer.

Wow, that is huge! I'm glad it didn't cause your tire to blow out while you were driving.

I had two very large screws like 3" long in my tire a couple of years ago. Then about a week later, while taking my kids to school, I ran over something and could hear this awful noise. I pulled over and there was a metal fork stuck in my tire! I was worried about pulling it out so drove the couple remaining and was then going to drive to our repair shop to make sure the tire wasn't damaged. However, after dropping them off, I double checked the tire to make sure it wasn't losing air and the fork was gone. But it made a dreadful noise every time the tire rotated and it hit the pavement.
