sceptred isle or Sonia rykiel in primo spot ?

I have close to my swing , a spot opening up next to teasing Georgia . Both of thee are coming this week and I need to decide . On the other side is Abe and Evelyn , if that helps . If you are sitting on the swing the open spot is directly across from Evelyn . Which is going to have best shape and perform the best ?

I've been talking about Scepter d' Isle on fortuniana for a long time. Mine is 11 yrs old and hasn't slowed down at all. I'm not one that enjoys looking at "floppy" roses. I know I've shown this a bunch of times but a picture says a thousand words.

I don't own Sceptred Isle, but will give you my thoughts on Sonia Rykiel. First the positive, her scent is to die for, very strong, and while sitting on your swing you will smell her sweet fragrance well. The rose itself is beautiful as well. Now the negatives. Sonia's roses are so big and heavy it takes a good three years for the plant to grow strong enough to hold up her beautiful blooms. Until then, it's best to stake the branches that have blooms as otherwise they will fall low to the ground. For me she stays relatively short as well, maybe 3 feet, she's more of a spreading plant. In comparing her to my Evelyn, she is much, much shorter. I do have Teasing Georgia and colorwise I don't think they would be the best color combination. Also my Teasing Georgia grows much taller and I think more of an upright rose next to her would be best.

All that being said, you will love your Sonia Rykiel, I would never be without her purely because of the beauty of her rose and the glorious scent.

Roxana: Here in zone 5a, folks use Rugosa as hedge-rose & they are round & dense & bushy & drought-tolerant. I saw many Rugosa cheap as body-bags-bare root at Menards today. These have 7 to 9 tiny-leaflet pattern & lighter green leaves, and NOT 5 large leaflets like modern roses. From the web: "Rugosa is from the Latin word “rugose,” meaning wrinkled. Rugosa leaves are textured with a fine quilting that gives the foliage depth and richness." Rugosa are the 1st to leaf out early spring, next are Austin roses. But Austin roses don't have the dense & nice round shrubs like Rugosa. However, in zone 5, Rugosas tend to be wider than tall, and occupy lots of space. The best TALL hedge I have seen at Chicago Botanical garden are John Cabot roses, more stunning in blooms than Rugosa, or any Austin roses: http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.1931&tab=1 Arching, armed with thorns / prickles. Light green foliage. Height of 5' to 8' (150 to 245 cm). Width of up to 10' (up to 305 cm). USDA zone 2b. Very hardy. Still growing, this past summer bloomed wonderfully. Completely disease free, and even the Japanese Beetles didn't bother it. In my area, I have cold (long)winters, and July/part Aug the temps can get up into the high nineties(F) with high humidity. That's the beauty of the Explorer roses - not only can they withstand cold, they also do well in heat & humidity. My roses don't get winter protection of any sort, and I use no chemicals whatsoever. Low nitrogen & Low phosphorus and high potassium & calcium was what helped with my Betty White. Both high nitrogen and high phosphorus attract thrips. High potassium & calcium (2 part potassium to 1 part calcium) helped with Betty White. It's short since I use low-nitrogen. My garden is no-spray and I use organic fertilizers: horse manure, alfalfa meal and just a tiny bit of chicken manure NPK 2-4-3 (Coop Poop), plus red-lava-rock for high potassium & calcium. Thanks everyone !! It can be so hard to choose . I think I'll get jubilee , there is something so unique about it ! I hope it looks nice near munstead wood .. Eeek. Judy everything does well for you ! Haha Moses thanks for your honest review of it , if I recall smelling it once it had a funny smell to me. I am hoping they'll be blooming at the nursery to be sure but if not I'm sure I'll still be fine ! I can get carding mill in a couple weeks if I still want it . I spent my fun money so now I'm only able to slide a few individual roses past the warden ;) saw this and had to share. Anyone who knows me knows it's true !

Bella, your John Davis is what I wish mine looked like. Mine are stumpy little shrubs planted at the base of trees, and that's probably why they're stumpy little shrubs. Yours, in the second photo, looks like he wants to come inside. All those buds! Looks like John Cabot on the left. They make a good combo. I see a beautiful deep red clem peeking from behind J Davis. Beautiful welcoming entry.

Ken , your photos are why I ordered it ! And it looks like it's similar in shape to teasing Georgia , so it may be the perfect partner . I'm sorry I didn't get it grafted .. Wish I had .

Mz stitch that is very helpful she only stays 3 ft tall ? I wasn't expecting that . I knew she was floppy but I thought she got taller . So I do have a good area for her still , and I'll still smell her from the swing . How wide is she for you ?
