One of them is a malus Mollie Ann. It is not top grafted, ergo the mention of pruning to develop a scaffold to work with its situation. It's an octapolid clone and assumes its pendulous habit as it matures. The other is Oekonomierat. It is also considered a natural weeper and not top grafted. I also did some scaffolding work with this one. What and how I trained mine would not be applicable to what you do with your tree. Basically, whatever height your top graft starts at will be how tall your trunk will remain and you cannot really train one of the pendulous branches to assume an upright form to add height. Any height it assumes will be from the pouf of branches on the top graft, and some are flatter than others. Staking and pruning in your situation is just a moot point, you won't be staking any higher than the understock trunk, and your pruning will be like the smaller 'named' crab you didn't buy. I will be glad to show you pictures of my trees, with close-ups however. You will see that the weeping effect is quites soft and I allow it to hit the ground if it wants and make no effort to control the flow. They will never look like the living umbrellas of the current craze, nor do I wish them to. First two pictures are the Mollie Ann, its habit and the branch angles at the trunk. I am with you guys. Thank you very much. It was my ignorance to think that the tree itself would turn into a proper tree "form", when I got the seedling one and a half years ago. I could have complained about it to the nursery, for it had one year warranty. However, the tree has been getting messy and messier. Now, I cannot complain it to the nursery, for it's over a year. No matter what now, I don't wish to get rid of this tree. It is a messy abnormal weeping cherry, unlike anything in an ad picture that the nursery used. However, it is a life, especially it is growing pretty well, except Japanese beetles bothering it. If I can do anything to try to train the tree, I would and will, even with only the slightest chance to make it into anything close to a tree form. I want it to be the average height, much higher than 6 ft, I assume. Since I don't prune trees much, I don't remember how to properly prune a tree. However, I have some books handy, and I can always read the pruning sections when I need it. If you have any suggestions of pruning, please advice me. Actually, I was a little confused about how to prune a tree to make it grow the direction I want. If I were to get rid of one of the trunks, how do I make the remaining one straight? neither one grows straight; they pretty much grow in a 45 degree angle....I cannot anticipate how the only trunk would grow "side way" without the other. At least now, they both depart from the center, and they kind of balance out on each other. I am a little afraid of the result once I dare doing something. look at this link for the potential of your little plant ... unfortunately we dont have a specific cultivar name ... https://www.google.com/search?q=weeping+Maple&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwihwqCR-r_JAhULwWMKHcgmCDEQ_AUICCgC&biw=928&bih=745&dpr=0.9 the plant basically grows ... for lack of a better term ... by heaping upon itself, over the years .... sometimes .... there are some branches that go more vertical to achieve the heapage .... the point being ... it should NOT NEED TO BE TRAINED TO DO SUCH but it will need some guidance.. or pruning ... over the years.. to create a shape you might like ... look again ... at the link .. and notice how you can see trunks on some.. and others not ... that was creative pruning ... i dont think yours needs any training or pruning.. for at least 5 years ... but.. as noted... after reviewing the link a third time.. decide if it needs to be better sited ... based on potential ... its a very common newb problem... not planning ahead for the plants potential ... they see this new babe ... and plant it where it fits today ... not really thinking about 10 .. 20 .. 30 years down the road what a difference a few pix make... ken ps: there is only one type of pruning for you to do right now .... once it loses its leaves.... just look for any crossing branches that rub against each other.. and remove one of them .... if any ... or any other damaged branches ... if you dont know how to make the proper cuts.. take pix.. open a new post.. and ask ...
