Corn leaf problem (picture attached)

Hello all -

I have been attempting to grow corn for the first time and I am running into a problem I can't seem to figure out. I am growing in Walmart fabric shopping bags inside a kiddie pool. I noticed a few weeks ago that the bases of most of the leaves have a section that is either translucent or has been completely chewed away. I have been treating them with Neem oil every couple of weeks... Can't believe how expensive that stuff is! Not sure what to make of it. I was thinking army worms at first, but I don't see any worms or pests on the plants. Please see the attached photo.

Hi Owen, one thing about neem oil: did you buy the concentrate stuff? I don't know if they have non-concentrated formula available. If you dilute it down, it should last a long time and it's pretty cheap per application. Just a side note in case that's why you thought it was expensive.

As for the corn, usually corn grows so fast that any bugs and most diseases aren't much of a threat to them. There might be an issue with them growing in the bags like they are. They like heavier soil and usually potting soil isn't very heavy. They need a lot of root space and the sides of the bags will sort of prune the roots. They might not be getting enough root space, but maybe someone else knows more about those symptoms.

Hey, thanks for the comment. I got the Ferti-lome Triple Action Plus with NEEM in a spray bottle, $12. Seemed like a lot for one bottle. Maybe the nursery where I bought it marked them up.

I got the design for the grow bag setup from a bunch of Youtube videos showing the same thing with great results. I filled them with a mixture of peat moss, compost, manure, vermiculite, perlite, and ~1/8 cup of Epsom salts per bag. I planted them on February 5th and fertilized them three weeks in with a general purpose 4-4-4 fertilizer. Hope that info helps diagnose the issue.

Amanda, I'm no expert so you may want to do more research before you act on my suggestion. Other posters here have been guided toward supplementing with a little epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) when the yellow in the leaf made the green portion around the veins look like a christmas tree. Your last photo looks like that to me. I understand the yellowing is caused by a magnesium defficiency and the epsom salt will solve the defficency. Just don't overdo the epsom salt!

Hi rhizo - happy spring no, I don't think it's fireblight although last season, one of my trees - one that grew wild on it's own and I'm not sure what it is - definitely looked like it had fire blight in August. Burned out branches that curled at the ends etc. I cut it back accordingly and so far, this season, that particular tree looks fine and the new leaves look healthy. It's only this plum tree that is exhibiting deformed and discolored leaves. The pear tree has a few deformed leaves...not many...but it is the tree closest to the plum. I wanted to upload a picture of the pear leaf, but they only allowed one picture upload. Jean, thanks for your response. I'm certainly no expert by any means but I've read that there are a few diseases they can share, so I'm concerned. I've been spraying diligently with agrimycin for the past few weeks, and just yesterday I started to spray with neem oil. Since I posted yesterday I decided to just get rid of the plum tree since it's been a problem from the day I bought it and before the weather gets any warmer and the rain and humidity pass the disease around I'm going to remove it from the roof. That's pretty cool. I've no idea what's wrong with your corn but the ppl in that video sure made it work! Good luck.
