The Open Garden and Rose Sale in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery WAS a wet event, but joyous, all the same.

Comments (20)Aprons - denim shirts - tshirts - there are other ways to spend your money at Open Garden! We have some heirloom iris too. Of course, we would not turn down a donation either. We are doing some big-ticket items this year after building up a fund - new markers for the plots, a new Historic Rose Garden sign, a new structure - we are making some wonderful improvements. Comments (25)Another Open Garden, which went by in its usual blur. I hugged and said hi to a lot of people but there were so many that I didn't get to meet, didn't get to see, and certainly didn't get to talk with! It's an intense experience when you are in the middle of the annual hurricane of rose frenzy. (Many of you know that I am the volunteer manager of the garden.) It was an INCREDIBLE DAY despite the heat. The roses are now a bit crispy from the heat, but they were wonderful on Saturday. I truly don't think there has ever been a day that the garden has looked better. I can't begin to list the people but here are a few. Peggy Martin is here, and spoke to a small group. I wish that we had publicized it better because it was simply wonderful hearing her speak. Fred Boutin and Gregg Lowery were here. Carolyn Parker came, and Mendocino Rose (Pamela). Capt Thomas' great-granddaughter (he's the breeder of Dr. Huey and many other roses, many of which are lost) came with his photo album and other memorabilia. Fred, his wife and several other people joined our curator, Barbara Oliva, in being recognized as original founders of the garden 20 years ago. It is so exciting to see what has developed from it. I remember there being a GW gathering at El Cerrito years ago. At future Open Gardens, maybe we should set a time and meeting place (the Rose Hotel would be perfect) for people to say hi to one another. We could also set out name badges and have people write GW and the name that we know you by. But you don't have to wait a year - do come to the symposium Oct 13-15! Comments (19)Thanks for the latest updates--they're fun! You know now that you mention it, I never really liked hens and chicks when I was a kid. I always thought they were too casual and (due to their durability) were plants that non-gardeners grew, heh heh. Now I really like them and find myself tucking them here and there. I bought six or seven different types a couple of weeks ago (after my little planter above) and am enjoying putting them here and there. I think some people find them a bit, um, trashy, but I like them anyway. :) Dotty, I had to think about your Silk Tree for a minute and then figured it's what I always called a mimosa tree. I see several on my walks around my neighborhood. At this time of year they're just seductive, aren't they? Do you find yours to be messy? I think they're really nice (there's a new dark-leaf variety at most nurseries these days, but I haven't seen it in bloom in person). Yes, giving plants away counts as gardening! I never think of doing it when I have a sale, but it's such a good idea. Some of my best houseplants have been from garage sales. Maki, I love beautyberries too. Besides your now-shorn shastas, what do you grow around them? I'm great with plants, but only so-so when it comes to color/design so I'd love to hear what you're growing near yours. I spent this past weekend painting more on the house (I'm halfway finished, yay (gray to yellow)), plus planting a ton of euphorbia plants, some red hot pokers/Kniphofia (just a few of the fancy-pants new hybrids and a ton of the olde-tyme screaming orange and yellow on big honkin' plants that I prefer), oh and a rose I've been seeking for awhile, 'Christopher Marlowe' which is already filling the front garden with that great old-fashioned rose scent and some nice hot color (peachy pink with plenty of orange mixed in). Comments (66)Pink Traviata does fantastic at nearby rose park .. that one is a beast in alkaline clay, hardy for the past 10 years. I'm putting MULCH FILM (black plastic) to kill grass for a new garden next year, but it takes 6 months to completely kill the grass, to be ready for next spring. Our cold zone zaps roses so small, it's so easy to fit into the garden. My La Reine is 1 foot by 0.5 foot, lots of blooms. My Barcelona (very hardy) is even smaller, like a mini-rose. The blooms of own-root are small too, but they get big after 4 years, if the soil is made loamy. When I first got William Shakespeare 2000, it was so small, and the bloom was 1 inch. !! Now in its 5th year, the bush is much bigger, and the bloom is at least 4 inch, I put tons of gypsum in its planting hole, which helps with zillion petals & also sulfate of potash for potassium....See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
