I grow more than one hundred roses. Some are small and before pruning the desfolio completely. Those who have grown a lot I find it hard to remove all the leaves.

I consulted the photographs I took of the roses after pruning them in February. As I said before, some rose bushes I took away all the leaves (those that were not big in size) and other roses did not defoliate them (those that already had grown much).

I check that I have these leaves of yellowish color and with spots in some rosebushes that I did not remove the old leaves when pruning. But also the same symptoms are present in some rose bushes that if elliminé all leaves after pruning.

Therefore, these leaves are not like that because they are old from the previous season and now, when the new leaves come out at the beginning of the season, they fall naturally, becoming this aspect before its fall.

I believe you have a fungus infection. Looks like cercospora leaf spot. It is similar to black spot, just as dangerous. Black spot's spots are totally black, with fuzzy edges. Cercospora leaf spot's spots are fuzzy edged black spots with tan to light/medium gray centers, as is evidenced in photos two and four.

A good fungicide applied according to the label instructions should restore the roses to health.

I use Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs. It works like a charm.

If the bushes are otherwise healthy and the new leaves are not affected I would do nothing rather than apply a poison. You may endanger bees, other beneficial insects and the birds that eat them. Also not good for cats, dogs and small children. I never use poisons in the garden and if a rose does not do well I take it out, but for the most part they are all healthy. I have leaves that look like yours and after a while they just fall off and don't affect the new leaves.

All afternoon I've been watching all my roses. I grow about 110 and about 20 of them have some leaves with these spots. Only two or three are severely affected, the rest have scarcely any blotchy leaves.

However I am glad of this inspection that I have performed. I have checked that only the leaves located at the bottom of the stems are stained with this color. All leaves that have grown later are healthy. None shows these spots.

I understand therefore that there was a problem but that it is currently solved or in the process of being resolved. Otherwise the new leaves would not grow healthy. It is not true?

I do not use in my garden products that can damage nature. Perhaps in an extreme case there is danger of losing a rosebush with much value to me. But for the moment I have not been given the case.

Hastta now, the aphid, powdery mildew .... that are the diseases and plagues that have suffered my roses, I have been solving or at least reducing them using mixture of potassium soap with water, or of nettle manure.

I do not know in what environmental situation the mildew occurs because I have never had it. Could you inform me so I can prevent it from appearing again in the future?

We had at the end of March late frosts that have reached temperatures lower than normal. In my climate, frost is no longer frequent in March.

I inspected all the roses after these two or three days of strong and late frost and they had no problem. Perhaps this intense cold after the outbreak of the first leaves could cause this problem?

I've been looking at websites that talk about rose diseases. And I wondered if it could be anthracnose. Are you sure it is Cercospora? The truth is that I find it difficult to differentiate between one type of stains and others.

Anthracnose spots are purple with gray/tan centers. Cercospora spots are black with gray/tan centers. It is really a difference without a distinction regarding the damage they do to roses. They are both hard on roses.

I also spend a lot of time watching my roses. I do not worry about rose diseases that are on yellow leaves. The leaves are yellow because the plant is no longer is supporting them and the chlorophyll has left them. This happens for many reason, lack of water, natural shedding, fluctuation in temperature or even disease. If diseases were the cause of the yellow color, the spots would have started on green leaves.

Fungal diseases thrive in high heat and humidity, and some of them can be spread thru the lower foliage when water splashes and spreads the spores. Air circulation can be poor near the ground and if the roses don't have morning sun they stay wet too long. Some roses get these diseases every year while others nearby may be hardly affected.

I grew over 200 roses in Ohio and often had this problem with my hybrid teas. Once I'd identified which roses were most susceptible I routinely removed the lower foliage early in the season. This also seemed to help with spider mites.

Now this was almost forty years ago. In my later gardens I did not grow any hybrid teas so I have not had to deal with the problem in many years.
